J. A. WHEELER.
BATH TUB, &c.
N0. 531,710. Patented Jan. 1, 1895.
UNITED STATES PATENT JAMES A. WHEELER, OF OSVVEGO, NEW YORK.
BATH-TUB, s60.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent. No. 581,710, dated January 1, 1 895.
Application fil d February 1, 1894, Serial No. 498,750. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J AMES A. WHEELER, of Oswego, in the county of Oswego, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bath Tubs or Analogous Hollow Articles, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of this invention is to provide bath-tubs and analogous hollow articles which shall be rigid and self-sustaining body lined with sheet metal and free from liability of warping or injuring the lining by shrinkage of the body; and to that end the invention consists essentially of a bath-tub oranalogous hollow article formed in one piece of woodpulp or analogous fibrous material and provided with a groove extending around the upper part of the interior of the body of said tub, a metallic lining covering the interior of the body and formed with an outward flange along its top edge and permanently secured with said flange in the aforesaid groove, and a filling strip permanently secured in the groove and covering the aforesaid flange, as hereinafter more fullydescribed and set forth in the claim.
In the annexed drawings Figure 1 represents avertical transverse section of abath-tub embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of the attach merit of the metallic lining.
arepresents the body which is formed in one piece of compressed fibrous material, preferably molded of wood-pulp and is thus seamless and free from liability of forming grooves and ridges on its interior by shrinkage or warping of the body. Thisis especially essential in large articles such as bathtubs designed to be covered with a thin metalliclining on its inside. b denotes said lining which extends smoothly over the entire interior of the tub and is formed with an outwardly turned flange b'-along its top edge. The body of the tub is provided with a groove (.Z extending around the upper part of the interior thereof, and in this groove is permanently secured the flange Z) ofthe metallic lining either by'nails, brads or screws t passing through the flange and into the body of the tub. I then cover said edge of the lining by a strip e of wood or lincrusta Vi alton or other suitable material permanently Secured to the body of the tub, said strip completely filling the groove and coming flush with the interior of the tub and being concealed by paint orotlier finishing material applied to the surface of the top portion of the tub.
\Vhat 1 claim as my invention is- As an improved article of manufacture, a bath-tub or similar large, hollow article formed in one piece of fibrous pulp provided with a groove extending around the upper part of the interior thereof, a metallic lining formed with an outwardly turned flange rigidly secured in said groove, and a filling strip permanently secured in the-groove and covering the flange of the lining asset forth and shown.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name this 19th day of December,
