SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 531,700, dated January 1, 1895.
Application filed May 5, 1394. Serial No- 610,214- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID E. ROWLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ire-Clamps; andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference be ing had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1, is a View showing my invention applied to use, and illustrating an ordinary hoist for drawing the clamps toward each other. Fig. 2, is a view of one of the clamps, showing the same brought into proper position to clamp a wire. Fig. 3, is a similar view, showing the reverse side of the clamp. Fig. 4, is a view of the clamp, showing the same open, and in position to receive the wire designed to be clamped. Fig. 5, is a detached view of the sliding jaw. Fig. 6, is a transverse section of the clamp.
The present invention has relation to wire clamps, designed and calculated to bring the ends of a parted wire into proper position to be attached together, and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings A, represents the body of the clamp, which is substantially of the form shown in the drawings, and as shown, it is provided with the grooved flange a, which grooved flan go is located upon one side of the body, and is so arranged that it will form the fixed jaw of the clamp proper.
To the body A, is pivotally attached the arm B, which arm is provided with the shoulder b, said shoulder being for the purpose hereinafter described.
The sliding jaw (1, is located against the face of the body A, and is provided with the groove 0, said groove corresponding substantially with the groove formed in the flange a. The sliding jaw O is provided with the side extension d, which side extension is extended The sliding jaw G, is provided with the.
curved shoulder or face g, which curved shoulder or face is so located that it will come in cont-act with the shoulder b, said shoulder 6, being curved so as to act as an eccentric and thereby impart a sliding movement to the jaw O as hereinafter described.
In use, when it is desired to place a wire in proper position to be clamped, the difierent parts are placed in the position illustrated in Fig. 4, which leaves an opening between the clamping jaws of suflicient size to insert the wire designed to be clamped. After the wire has been properly placed, the bar D, is moved longitudinally, which movement brings the sliding jaw 0 toward the grooved flange 01., thereby clamping the wire.
For the purpose of preventing the clamp proper from tilting when strain is brought upon the bar D, the link f, is provided.
It will be understood that in order to bring the ends of a wire together to be attached, two clamps must be employed; one clamp to be placed upon each section of the wire. In the drawings, I have illustrated a hoist provided with two hooks h, which hooks engage with the eyes is.
It will be understood that as the rope E is pulled the sheave blocks F will be drawn toward each other, thereby bringing the clamps together with their sections of wire toward each other.
It will be understood that the rope E, may be properly looked after the sections of wire have been brought into the proper position to be fastened.
I do not desire to limit the present invention to the hoist or sheave blocks shown; but have illustrated this device as one of many that may be used to bring the clampstoward each other. 7 Having fully described my invention, what i I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
