CUTTER-HEAD.
SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 531,396, dated December 25, 1894.

' To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALGENON SEADON SPAULDING, of Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Cutter-Heads, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to v the accompanying drawings,'forming a part of the same, and in which- Figure 1 represents a cutter-head with the knives and break-irons attached thereto. Fig. 2 is an end View of the break-iron, and Fig. 3-is a view of that side of the break-iron lying next the cutter-head.

My invention relates to the plate known as the break-iron which is interposed between the cutting knife and the side ofth'e cutterhead as hereinafter described and specifically set forth in the annexed claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A denotes the cutter-head of the usual form and provided with the T-shaped grooves A to receive the heads of the attaching boltsA by which the cutting knives are held in position in the usual and well known manner.
B, B, are the knives secured upon opposite sides of the cutter-head A by bolts A and nuts A Between the knives B, B, and the sides of the cutter-head A are interposed the break-irons O, 0, provided with elongated holes 0', through which the attaching bolts A pass. One edge of the break-iron C overhangs the side of the cutter-head A and is provided with'a convex rib or head 0 forming a shoulder O which bears against the corner of the cutter-head. At each end of the break-iron a T-shaped piece of metal is removed forming the opening 0 and leaving the projecting wings O as indicated by the broken lines in Fig. 3. VVhenthe break-iron is applied to the side of the cutter-head the wings G which hitherto lay in the plane of the break-iron are bent and turned into the T-groove A as represented at C drawing the shoulder C firmly against the corner of the cutter-head.
The T-shaped opening O" is made large enough to allow for the variation in different cutter-heads of the distance between the corner of the cutter-head and the T-shaped slot A, allowing the break-iron to be fitted to the cutter-head to which mm to be applied so as to draw the shoulder 0 against the side of the cutter-head. The outer surface of the break-iron to which the knife is to be applied, is slightly curved at the overhanging edge slightly raising the tip a, as shown in Fig. 2, so that when the knife is applied the under surface of the knife will be drawn firmly against the tip a by the attaching bolts, which forms a tight joint preventing the admissionof shavings between the break-iron and the cutting-knife. As the shaving is raised by the cutting edge b, it strikes against the convex surface 0 causing it to be deflected and broken, thereby preventing the splitting of the fibers of the. wood, in advance of the action of the knife and the force exerted against the convex surface 0 will be received by the shoulder 0 bearing against the corner'of the cutter-head. Unless the break iron is securely locked in position by means of the abutting shoulder 0 it is difficult to hold the knives and break-irons from displacement When the machine is in operation, especially in hard or knotty Wood. The wings O are preferably formed at the ends of the break-iron, but it will be obvious that projecting wings adapted to be bent intov the T- shaped grooves A could be formed in the central section of the break-iron if desired.
What I claim as my invention, and. desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a cutter-head and cutting knife attached thereto, of a breakiron interposed between said knife and cutterhead and provided with an abutting shoulder 0 bearing against the side of the cutter-head, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a cutter-head pro- 'vided with grooves and cutting knife attached ting edge of the knifeslightly raised, substantially as described. Dated this 17th day of February, l892.
