Description

(N0 Modevl.) l v I F. E. GUTTBRSON.
I SEAL.
No. 531,376. -Patented Dec. 25, 1894.
una. u Foz;
UNITED y STATESN PATENT OFFICE.
-FRANK E. GrU'lTERSON,` OF BROOKLYN, NEW'YORlQASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO HENRY ll. HOWARD, OF EASTORANGE, NEWJERSEY.
' To all' whom it bfi/wy concern;
SEAL'.
y sPEcIEIcATIoN'foraing part-of rettersratent Nq. sanare, dated December 25, 1894,
Application' and ps1 12, 1894. serial No. 507,213. marien.
Be it known that I, FRANK E. GrofrrnnsoN,`
a c'itizenjof the United States, residing at Brooklyn, inthe coun-tyof Kings and State of NewYork, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inl Seals, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to theaccompanying drawings.
composed of lead or' other soft compressible material and used torsealin grailway cars, baggage, &c., the object of my invention being to provide aseal, of the. class referred to, which may be cheaply produced and in which the wire shackle is so firmly anchored in the seal that the lattercannot betamperedl with withoutbeing badly mutilated or destroyed, thus ef fectively providing against fraud.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved seal before the same has been compressed by the dies of a sealing press. Fig. 2 is a side elevation and Fig.3 is a sectionof the same,a portion of the Awire shackle being omitted. Fig. 4t is a perspective view showing the wire shackle in the form it will assume when the seal has been compressed. Figs. 5 and 6 are top and side views, respectively, of the seal after it has been compressed. Figs. 7 and 8 show 'two forms of myinvention differing slightly from that illustrated in Figs. l, 2 and 3.
The body of my improved seall consists of4 thel base A, the neck Z2 and the cap or disk c.
The neck b is provided with a transverse holed and the base A maybe provided'with a conical or concave recess c to render the crushing of the neck or post comparatively easy, so
that too great pressure will not be required in the sealing operation. One end of the wire vshackle fis provided with a hook or loop g extending up into the neck bin such position .as/to partly encircle the h ole d in said neck,
` the metallic seal being cast onto this end of -the wire shackle, so that the wire will be embedded inthe seal, the free end-of vthe wire shackle being passed through the said hole d and then wound around the neck b, as shown -in Fig. 1. With the ends of the shackle thus disposed,.relative to the seal, when the latter is compressed the hook or loop g of the shac klewire will be bentever onto and around the rother or free end of the wire passing through-the hole d and be compressed down u 'pon the said free end as-shown in Figli; and
it will be readily understood that with the two ends of .the wire shacklethus engaged with each other it will be practically impossible to tamper withthe seal without destroy- My invention relates to that class of sealsy ing the same, for the reason that the two ends of the wire shackle are firmly locked together. This'result is largely due tothe fact that the hole d in the neck c is so placed as to be transverse tothe length of the shackle wire f, s o that to pass the free end'ol the said shackle wire through the saidhole, and wind it about said neck, it willb'e ynecessary to bend said wire at a right angle, or approximately so, and thus when the seal is compressed the two ends of the shackle wire will be secu-rely locked together.
Various modifications may be made in the details of the seal Without departing from the `essential features of my invention. Forexafnple, the' edges of the base A, and the cap or disk c maybe beveled, as4 shown in Fig. 7, or may be rounded as shown in Fig. S, and the recess in the said base may also be omitted, if desired, as shown in these two figures. Also the loop or hook g at thexed end of the shackle wire f embedded in the seal may be closed as shown in Fig. 8 instead of being open as shown in Figs. 3 and 7, the open loop or hook, however, vshown in said Figs. 3 and 7, being practically closed when the seal is compressed.
lIt will be understood that a sealing press with anyl suitable form of d ies may be used in `compressing-'my improved seaLthese dies or the. sealing press, however, not forming any part of mypresent invention.
Having, thus' described my invention, I
claini `and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination with'a metallic seal consisting of the base A, the neck b, provided with the hole d, and the cap or disk c, of the shackle wire f one end of Awhich is provided with a hook or loop g embedded in said seal and extending into said neck around said hole, and the other or free end of which is to be IOO passed through said, hole and wouu about said neck, the said hole d b'eug transverse to the length of thesad shacklewire, so that the' free end 0f the latter will be bent at a. right;l
5 angle, or approximately so, to itsy length, to pass it throughsad hole :mdwnd it about said neck.
In testimony whereof I affix 'myegoature in presenoe of twowtnesses.
FRANK E. vIGUTTEwSON.
