AUTOMATIC FIRE-EXTINGUISHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 531,228,dated December I8, 1894.

To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, EDWIN W. STORER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Fire-Extinguishers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, of which Figure 1 is an elevation, the parts being in the normal position; Fig. 2, a vertical section on a line from letters A to E, Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a similar section after the water stop valve and adjuncts have been released by the actionof heat from a fire Fig. 4, a perspective view, enlarged, of the fusible-joint locking piece detached; Fig. 5, an enlarged plan view of the sprinkling disk, detached.
This invention relates to that well known class of fire extinguishing devices-commonly termed automatic -wherein water under a head, or pressure, is permitted to escape by the fusionof a plug, or the like, releasing a stop valve, and thereby extinguishing a fire. v
The invention consists in a novel construc tion and combination in connection with a water exit pipe of a stop-valve, arms or le- Vers bearing thereon, and a fusible joint device for normally locking said arms against the valve, and means for maintaining the arms and locking device in place, together with a sprinkling or spreading disk, whereby when the fusible part of the locking device shall be melted by the heat of a fire, or an in cipient fire, in the apartment wherein the ex tinguisher is located, said arms will be released, the valve then opened by the water pressure, and the escaping water will strike forcibly against the said disk and be widely distributed, thereby extinguishing the fire within the range of the water.
The invention also consists in certain details of construction which tend to perfect its operation, and which will be hereinafter duly pointed out.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the preferred form of the invention, A, is a cylindrical nipple adapted'to be screwed .on the end of awater conducting pipe (not shown) suitably located in a room, or elsewhere, in the building to be protected from fire.
B, is a stop valve which is suitably seated upon'the exit end of the nipple, or preferably, upon an interposed non-corrodible disk, I), as hereinafter described. The head of the valve is charnfered as seen,'in order that a conven ient hearing may be had for one end of each of two oppositely disposed arms, 0. These arms have a hook or projection, 0', Figs. 2 and 3, which are adapted to engage a corresponding projection, or hook, a, of vertical lugs, a extending from the sides of the nipple beyond the valve B.
D, is a fusible locking device, which I term a cup. It is open toward the arms, 0, and is arranged to receive the free ends of the latter, as most clearly seen in Fig. 2. This locking box, or device, may be made in various forms, but, generally, I prefer to make it of the form shown, wherein it is composed, of side and end pieces, (1', that are united by solder joints, 01 which will fuse at a temperature such as will cause it to melt readily by the heat resulting from a fire.
E, is a pin secured to a yokeF, extending from the sides of the nipple. This is preferably a screw pin, as shown, so as to be readily adjusted with relation to cup, D, against which-or it may be against an intervening plate, di-the point of the pin rests.
When the parts are in the normal, or locked position, it will be seen that the valve, B, will be retained firmly against the end of the nipple by means of the arms, cup, D, which confines the free ends of the arms, and the screw pin,E. When, however, the fire temperature becomes sufficiently high to melt the fusible joints of the cup, the arms will'be freed, the the valve will then force the latter outwardly, they escaping from their engagement, with the hooks of lugs, a and flying off with the valve, and the water will then escape from the nipple.
In order to secure as uniform and wide disa spreading or sprinkling device, that is secured within the yoke, F, in line with the exit of the nipple. This device consists of a disk, G, having a series of tangential, twisted, in turned flanges, 9', having apertures, 9 between the same and a series of spurs, or projections, 9 on the lower face of the disk, with apertures, g directed oppositely to the flanges, and apertures, y so that when the water escaping from the nozzle of the nipple, striking forcibly against the disk, the stream will be broken, a portion thereof being widely spread by the face of the disk andthe flanges and apertures between the same, and another portion passing through the apertures, g being directed by the spurs, and also widely distributed but in different paths or arcs from the other portion.
As it is manifestly desirable thatcorrosion or sticking of the stop valve, B, in its seat against the nipple, should be obviated, I in terpose for that purpose a thin disk,b, of the metal aluminum between the end of the nipple and the valve, the disk resting upon the edges of the latter; and, in order to obtain greater tightness or security of the joint, I make a depression, 11 on the inner face of the valve whereby the pressure of the water against the disk, may force in the disk and thus tend to tighten the joint.
The form and construction of the spreading device may be varied, and indeed, the other elements of my extinguisher, by those skilled in the art, without departing from the essential features or principle of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a fire-extinguisher of the class recited, the combination with the nipple having the yoke, the valve, the lugs having the hooks, the arms bearing against said valve and having hooks engaging the hooks of the lugs, the fusible joint locking device engaging the free ends of said arms, the screw pin bearing against said locking device, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a fire-extinguisher of the class recited, the combination with the nipple having the yoke, the valve, the lugs having the hooks, the arms bearing against said valve and having hooks engaging the hooks of the lugs, the f usible joint locking device engaging the free ends of said arms, the screw or pin bearing against said locking device, together with a water spreading device, located opposite to, and in line with the exit end of the nipple, all constructed and adapted, to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
