To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JOSEPH TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oklahoma, in the county of Oklahoma and State of Oklahoma have invented new and useful Improvements in Automatic Sprinkler- Heads, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved automatic sprinkler head adapted for use in connection with fire extinguishing systems, one
object of the invention being to provide an improved sprinkler head of this character which is extremely strong and durable; another object being to provide an improved automatic sprinkler head which embodies a pair of struts and a fusible link so constructed and arranged as to prevent strain from being applied to the fusible solder.
The invention consists in the features of construction, combination, and arrangement of devices, hereinafter, fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of an automatic sprinkler head constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same at right angles to Fig. 1 and showing the outer ends of the struts and of the fusible link.
Fig. 3 is partly a plan and partly a horizontal sectional view of the same.
Figs. 4 and 5 are detail perspective views of the struts.
Figs; 6 and 7 are similar views of the members of the fusible link.
The head 1 comprises a diamond shaped frame lat the base of which is an exteriorly threaded nipple 2 adapted to be screwed in the outer end of a water pipe.- At the upper end of the frame is a cross bar 3 integral therewith and which has a threaded opening 4 which is concentric with and spaced from the nipple.
A deflector 5 is provided with a threaded stem 6 which is engaged in and extends through the opening 4. A cap 7 is seated on the outer or upper end of the nipple and forms a removable closure therefor.
To secure the closure cap in place, hold it thus secured under normal conditions, and cause the closure cap to be released in the event of a fire, I provide a pair of struts 8, 9, and also provide a fusible link 10. ened outer end portion 11 provided in its upper side with a cross channel 12. On the under side of the strut 8 and at a point spacedfrom its outer end is a socket 13. Near its inner end, on its upper side, the said strut is provided with a point 14 which engages in a circular depression in the lower or inner end of the screw 6. Said strut also has on its upper side a downwardly extending wedge shaped point 15 which is spaced a greater distance from its inner end than the point 1 The strut 9 has its outer. end fitted as at 16 in the socket 13 of the strut 8. The point 15 of the strut 8 engages in a groove 17 in the upper side and near the inner end of the strut 9 and said strut has at its end side, near its inner end a downwardly extending point 18 which engages in a central depression in the upper sideof the cap. Hence the two struts are angularly related to each other asshown. The points 14 and 18 of the struts are directly in line axis of the screw 6 and cap '7 and the point 15 between said struts is to one side of.such common axis so that the downward pressure of the screw tends to turn the struts in opposite directions on the points 14, 15, and 18, as will be understood. The strut 9 is provided on its lower side near its inner end Witha hook 19. The link 10, which is fusible, comprises a pair of members 20, 21, the member 20 is bent to form angularly related arms 22,23, the arm 22 having an opening 24 through which the outer end of the strut 8 extends so that that portion of the arm 22 which forms the upper side of the opening 24 bears in the cross channel 12 of said strut as shown. The link member 21 has an opening 25 for Said member bears on the upper side of the arm 23 of the link member 20 and is secured to said link member by fusible solder as at 26. Hence the fusible link serves to connect the outer ends of the struts together and utilizes the leverage of the struts so that the strain or stress on the link and the fusible solder is negligible. Hence the sprinkler head is extremely strong and durable and there is no danger of the cap being released excepting in the event of a fire. Should a fire occur, the solder is melted, permitting the separation of the members of the fusible link and owing to the pressure constantly maintained on the inner ends of the struts by the screw and the arrangement of the pivoting point 15, to one side of the common plane or axis of the screw, cap, and points 14 18, the struts as soon as they are released by the fusible link, separate and drop from between the cap and the screw, the cap is then removed from the seat by the pressure of the water on the wall 'discharged through the nipple strikes the deflector and hence causes the water to be thoroughly sprinkled and the fire to be extinguished.
Owing to its shape, the frame of the sprinkler head is extremely strong as well as being characteristic in appearance.
In practice, the sprinkler head with all of its parts excepting the fusible link is preferably made of high grade phosphor bronze metal but may be made of any suitable material.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. In a sprinkler head, a frame having a duct, :1 deflector spaced from the end of the duct and having a stem extending from an opening in the frame and arranged opposite the end of the duct, a closure on the end of the duct, a pair of struts arranged at an angle to each other, one longer than and extending beyond the other, said struts closure, and a fusible link connecting the outer portion of the struts together.
2. In a sprinkler head a closure cap, a stress applying member, a pair of struts in mutual contact at their inner ends and also at their outer ends, one of said struts having a recess and the other having a projection engaging in said recess, one of said struts also having a hook at the outer end and the other having a hook at the outer side, spaced from the inner end, and a link comprising a pair of members and fusible solder connecting said members together, the members being respectively provided at their outer ends with openings engaged by the hooks of the struts, one of the struts engaging the stress applying member and the other bearing on the closure cap.
