Beit known that I, AZEL CLARENCE l-loUcH, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Butler, in the county of Vayne and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cash-Recorders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which forms a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in cash registers and recorders, of that class which have a roll or continuous strip of paper upon which the desired entries are made, the paper upon which the ent-ries are made being moved a short distance at a time past an opening in the machine casing.

The present invention relates particularly to an improved method of rotating the drum upon which the paper is carried, as shown for instance in my Patents No. 484,501, granted to me October 1S, 1892, and No. 486,107, granted November l5, 1892.

As the invention does not contemplate any change or improvement in the mechanism of the recording device which is referred to above, which mechanism is vdescribed in detail in the patents mentioned, exceptingr in the single feature pertaining to the mechanism employed in rotating the drum, a detailed description of the recording mechanism is not deemed necessary in this connection, and the features of the machine which I have shown in the accompanying drawing are only such as I deem necessary in order to illustrate the application of the present invention.

The invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, forms a part of this specification, and in which drawing I have shown a longitudinal vertical section of the cash-recorder with my drum-rotating mechanism applied thereto.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawing by letter, A designates the recording-drum which is suitably journaled within the casing of the machine, the circumference of the drum being just below the top of the casing B. C is an lopening through which access is had to the face of the paper wound upon the drum.

To the drum A is attached one end of the roll of paper D, upon which the record is made, which paper is, by a succession of movements of the drum on its axis, gradually wound upon the same, and in being wound is caused to pass and be exposed at the recordopening C in the top of the case.

In my former patent, in which the details of construction and operation of the recorder mechanism are more fully illustrated and described, I have described certain mechanism connected with the cash drawer, whereby upon the opening of the drawer the recording-drum would be automatically rotated a suflicient distance to carry the last entry made upon the paper beyond the opening in the case, and expose a fresh surface to receive the next entry to be made, but in the present invention I contemplate omitting entirely the mechanism referred to, and to substitute therefor the following simple and positively acting lever mechanism for causing a rotation of the drum bya slight pressure upon a push button, against the tension of a spring which serves to cause the button or post to return to its normal position when relieved of pressure.

The lever mechanism referred to consists essentially of a rod or lever E, pivoted at one of its ends to one end of the swinging locking frame E, the free end of the said lever engaging the notches G upon the inner end of the recording-drum A. The rocking-frame F is actuated by the push button or post I through the agency of the interposed rod J attached at one of its ends to the push button and at its opposite end pivotally attached to the upper edge of the frame, aspiral spring K surrounding the rod J which spring is compressed in pressing the push button, and upon being released serves to cause the button to return to its normal position, in readiness to serve in the next succeeding movement of the button. A pawl L serves to prevent reverse movement of the drum, as will be readily understood.

I provide, as shown in the drawing, the swinging frame F which is preferably rectangular in shape, and has pivoted to a lug carried at one end thereof a spring actuatedl push rod J, the same frame having the rod E pivoted to its opposite end, and an integral projecting portion M which engages with a bolt N, designed to lock the drawer. By this construction it will be seen that the bolt is raised simultaneously with the partial revolution of the drum.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In combination with the locking mechanism of a cash register, consisting of va rocking frame F carrying an integral projecting arm M adapted to engage a lockingbolt N, a spring actuated push rod J having pivotal connection at its inner end with the said rocking frame, and a rod E having one end pivoted to the frame F and its free end engaging with the circumferential notches G of a record drum, the said mechanism adapted to siinultaneously unlock a cash drawer and cause a partial rotation of the drum all substantially as shown and described.
