To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, DAVID R. SALISBURY, of Lansing, county of Ingham, and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Money-Drawers and Cash-Recorders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

The object of my invention is to provide convenient means for fastening a moneydrawer and a reliable means of recording each transaction as it occurs in business, so that at the end of each day a complete footing of the cash receipts and expenditures may be obtained.

By my invention I also provide for securing the records against being changed or tampered with in any way.

Referring to the letters upon the drawings, A indicates an ordinary box, provided with a sliding drawer B. The top 0, which is preferably hinged to the box, may be integral with the top of a counter, if desirable; or the box may be made to set upon the top of the counter, just as preferred.

D indicates a bearing-piece extending the length of the box on one side of it above the money-drawer, and E a corresponding bearing-piece extending through the middle por' tion of the box. Beneath these bearing-pieces may be provided a false bottom F, if preferred, for security.

WVithin the forward end of the box, upon these bearings, is secured by suitable means upon journals G the roller II, that is adapted to carry a roll of paper I. The paper may be ruled longitudinally in any desired form. Upon the opposite end of the bearing-pieces is journaled in like manner a corresponding roller K. The paper is adapted to be fastened to the forward roller and to be wound around it,'and the loose end to be fastened by any convenient means to the other roller, so that the roller K being caused to rotate will wind the paper off from the other roller onto it. Between these rollers upon a projection L in the bearing-pieces is secured a bridge M, over which the paper passes in being wound upon the roller K. In the top (I of. the box above the bridge M is provided an oblong slot or opening N, which extends nearly across the paper and exposes a sufficient portion of it to contain the entry of a single transaction and no more. Upon one end of the roller K is secured a ratchet-wheel O.

Near'the rear end of the box A is hinged a lid or cover P, adapted to close the opening in the top of the box. This cover extends, preferably, to the front of the box, where it is preferably provided with a lock Q, which may be of any suitable kind. Near the rear end of the cover is pivotally secured in a slot R the pawl S, that is adapted to engage with the ratchet 0 upon the roller K and cause it to rotate whenever the cover is lifted.

T indicates a forked tongue, that is loosely secured to the under side of the cover by the screw U. The fork of this tongue straddles the pawl and guides it when the cover is raised. Being loosely confined to the cover, it closes down out of the way when the cover is shut.

V indicates a pin that normally projects above the top of the box A at its upper end, and passes through a hole in the bearingpiece D at its lower end.

\V indicates a coiled spring surrounding this pin, that bears at its lower end against the bearing-piece and at its upper end against a projection, which may be a pin or a collar secured to the pin V. This collar serves the double purpose of receiving the force of the spring and also preventing the escape of the pin V from place.

X indicates a pin-hole in the edge of the drawer B, which is adapted to receive the pin V when itis depressed.

The operation of my invention is as follows: Suppose the cover to have been lifted, as in position shown in the drawings, Fig. l, and a sale to have been made. The record of the transaction is written upon the roll of paper exposed through the slot in the top of the box A. Then the cover is closed and secured in place, the drawer B having been closed after the transaction, of course. By

the closing of the cover P the pin V will be depressed into its hole X in the drawer, thereby locking the drawer. When another sale takes place, the cover is unlocked and lifted. Upon being lifted. the pawl S engages with the ratchet O on the roller K and imparts a portion of a revolution to it. Thereupon the paper is drawn along so as to expose a clean surface through the slot in the top of the box, and the operation maybe repeated as before.

In some cases it might be desirable to provide a bell and a look upon the drawer to announce each time it is closed, and the locking mechanism for the cover should be seen re, but easily operated. These matters do not enter into the substance of my invention, and may be varied to suit convenience.

\Vhat I claim is- 1. The combination, with the box and money-drawer contained therein, of rollers within the box, a eoverP upon the box, mechanism operatively connecting the cover With one of the rollers, and a spring-actuated pin operatively connected with the cover and adapted to lock the drawer to the box, as and for the purpose specified.

2. The combination, with a box and a money-drawer contained therein, of a false bottom or partition F above the drawer, the

cover P, and recording and locking mecha11- ism adapted to be operated by the cover, located above the false bottom, substantially as set forth.

The combination, with a box and moneydrawer, of rollers carried upon suitable bearings within the box, paper upon the rollers, a ratchet-Wheel upon one of the rollers, 21 cover hinged to the top of the box, and a pawl adapted to engage with the ratchet-Wheel and pivoted to the cover, substantially as set forth.

I. In a cash-recorder, the combination, with a box provided with suitable bearing-pieces, of paper-rollers borne thereon, a ratchet-wheel upon one of the paper-rollers, a cover hinged to the top of the box, a pawl pivotally carried upon the cover and adapted to engage with the ratchet-wheel, and aforked tongue loosely secured to the cover for guiding the pawl, substantially as set forth.
