A. V. T. SABROB. RELEASING BELAYING PIN.
No. 530,722. Patented Dec.' 11.1894.
Ila /f UNITED STATES PATENT OEFCE.
AXEL VILHELM THEODOR SABROE, OF HADERSLEV, GERMANY.
RELEASING BELAYING-PIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 530,722, dated December 11 1 894. Application filed J'nne 28,189.4. Serial No. 515,932. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, AXEL VILHELM THEO-V DOR SABROE, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Haderslev, in the Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Releasing Cleats or Belaying-Pins, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to apparatus for quickly releasing cords or ropes, as the sheet holding ropes in a sailing vessel and the like, and it consists of the rope holding and releasing prongs, looking and releasing mechanism for controlling the prongs, and a hollowv block containing the locking and releasing apparatus, as hereinafter described reference being made to theaccompanying drawings, in which-A Figure 1, is a sectional elevation of my irnproved releasing cleats or belaying pins. Fig.
2, is aplan view, and Fig. 3, is a detail inside elevation.
In a suitable hollow block A, of cast metal or other approved material, and provided with a suitable base a, for securing it to the deck of avessel or other support also constructed with the o val top b, with slots c, in the diagonally opposite corners, I arrange two prongs D on pivots F within the chamber of the block so as to project outward through the slots respectively, said prongs having the arms E reaching inward from the pivots past the sides of a center post Gr. The center post is supported at top and bottom so as, to turn freely, and has oppositely projecting arms H and the slot k, the arms being to support the arms E ot the rope holding prongs and lock said prongs in the positions-for securing the ropes as represented in full lines in Figs. 1 and`2, and the slot being to receive the end of a lever L, Fig. 2, for turning the post to shift the post arms H from under the prong arms E, to allow the prongs to assume the positions indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. l, for the release of the ropes. The block A, is slotted in one side as indicated by the dotted lines d Fig. 1, for admitting the lever L to the post for turning it.
For re-adjustingthe prongs for use again they are first returned to the position represented by the full lines Fig. l, and then the post is returned to the position in which it is also shown in said ligure, whereby the prongs D are locked as before preparatory to securing the ropes again, the ropes being looped or wound on the prongs D the same as on the prongs of ordinary belaying cleats.
I claim as my invention- The combination with the hollow block having the slots in the upper part, of the prongs pivoted within the chamber of the block and projecting outward through the slots, the inwardly projecting arms of the prongs, the center post, the arms of the center post engaging the inwardly projecting arms of the prongs when in operative position, and means for turning the center post all substantially as described.
In testimony whereof Iaftix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AXEL VILHELM THEODOR SABROE.
