SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 530,584, dated December 11, 1894.

To all whom it may concern: I

Be it'known that I, S. SPENCER EOOLESTON, of Canastota, in the county of Madison and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in theart to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in toys. This toy is made up in the general form of a lawn-mower, having snapping tongues for imitating the noise of a lawn-mower.

In the drawings which accompany and form apart of this specification and in which similar figures of reference refer to corresponding parts, Figure 1 shows a side elevation of the toy with a portion of the handle removed. Fig. 2 shows a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 shows a cross section. Fig. 4 shows a plan view with thehandle portion of the device removed. Fig. 5 shows the device in perspective. Figs. 6 and 7 show details of construction.

The device consists essentially of a pair of

wheels

1, 1, preferably having corrugated faces to assure their turning by traction. These Wheels are rigidly secured to a sh aft 2 which is provided with enlarged toothed wheels 3, three of them. being shown in the construction. The exact details of the construction of the cog wheels is more particularly shown in Figs. 6 and 7, and consists in providing an enlargement 3* on the shaft, and to this enlargement is nailed or secured a strip of tin or sheet metal 3 which has been crimped as shown, to produce, when secured on the enlargement, a cog-like surface. Engaging on the three several cogs thus formed, are the free ends of the three snapping tongues or

4, 4,&c. These springs 4 are secured on a cross-bar 5 which is mounted in the trailing frame 6 by being mounted'on a sliding bar 7. The bar 7, one of which is provided on each side of the trailing frame, is held in eyes 8 and 9 free to slide toward or from the shaft or axle of the device. The

bar 5 with the springs 4 are held toward the shaft by a spring 10 provided on each of the sliding bars 7. The rear end of the frame 6 is carried by a ground-roller 11 pivoted in the rear end of the frame and provided, if found more desirable, with enlargement 12. On the under side of the bar 5 is pivoted at 13 a catch 14 for holding the machine or toy out of gear. This catch engages in a notch or recess 15 in the cross-bar 16 of the trailing frame.

For propelling the toy, there is provided a yoke17 the arms 17 of which engage the shaft or axle adjacent to the wheels 1; the shaft being formed to rotate the arms. From the yoke extends a handle 18 by which the device may be operated. Y

The arrangement of the several cog-wheels 3 with reference to the several springs which operate them, is such that the springs will strike or slip from cog to cog at difierent intervals, thus making a continuous clatter very similar to the noise of a lawn-mower. The device is propelled as a lawn-mower, but can be backed up, in which case, the ends of the springs 4 engage in depressions of the cog, and the bar 5 on which the springs are mounted, is forced back against the tension of the springs 10 while the end of the snappers 4 are passing by the center of the cog.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isr .1. A toy mounted on a pair of wheels and having a shaft extending between the wheels to which they are each secured, a cog-wheel secured on the shaft, a snapping spring ongaging on the cog-wheel and mounted on an adjustable bar held toward the cog-wheel by ping tongue out of engagement with the cogwheel, substantially as set forth.
