BUCKLE. No. 530,363. Patented-Dec. 4, 1894-.
UNITED STATES PATE T OFFICE- ALFRED STEINER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 530,363, dated December 4, 1894. Application filed July 16, 1894:. Serial No. 517,739- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED STEINER, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Buckles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide certain new and useful improvements in buckles, whereby the operator is permitted to securely draw the strap tight over a desired article or object, and to lock the parts of the buckle in place to prevent the untying of the strap by unauthorized persons.
The invention consists in certain parts and details, and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter fully described and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a perspective view of the improvement as applied for holding executed leaves in a book in position. Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view of the improvement. Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation of the same, on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, the strap being in a locked position. Fig. etis a side elevation of the improvement with the strap unlocked; and Fig. 5 is a face View of the key for opening and closing the lock.
The improved buckle is provided with a metallic buckle plate A, formed at one end with a loop A adapted to be engaged by one end of a strip B passed around the article or object to be held or tied by the strap and buckle. The free end of the band or strap B passes through aclamping frame 0, having its front end 0' adapted to press the strap against the front end of a tongue A forming an integral part of the plate A.
The clamping frame 0 is formed at or near its middle with a pivot Oitmounted to turn in a suitable bearing A formed in the tongue A as plainly shown in the drawings. The rear transverse bar (J of the clamping frame 0 is adapt-ed to rest on top of the plate A, and to be locked in place thereon by a lock preferably made in the shape of abutton D, pivoted on the plate A, and adapted to be turned over the said transverse bar 0 as plainly illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3.
The button D is provided with a narrow portion, which when facing the bar 0 permitsa convenient opening of the clamping frame 0, as indicated in Fig. 4. The button D is also provided with apertures adapted to be engaged by a key E, shown in Fig. 5, to permit the operator to conveniently turn the said button, to lock or unlock the clamping frame 0, by engaging the button D with the bar 0 or disengaging it therefrom.
It will be seen that when the several parts are in an open position, as shownin Fig. 4:, and a strap has been passed around the article to be tied, then the operator pulls on the free end of the strap until the strap is drawn sufficiently tight over the object, and then the operator presses the bar 0 downward so as to impart a swinging motion to the clamping frame 0, to cause the front bar 0" to firmly clamp the strap against the front end of the tongue A He then turns the button Dinto the position shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, so as to lock the clamping frame in place as previously described.
It will be seen that by the arrangement described, the free end of the strap or band is securely clamped in position by the clamping frame on the fixed tongue, and the said clamping frame is looked in place on the plate A by the button D, to prevent unauthorized persons from opening the strap to get at the contents tied by the strap.
While this device is designed for various purposes it is more especially used, however, in connection with a receipt protector, for which I have made application for Letters Patent of theUnite'd States,Serial No.509,978, filed May 3, 1894:.
I do not limit myself to the special construction of the button shown, as the same may be varied and other forms substituted.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A buckle comprising a buckle plate formed with a projecting fixed tongue, a
clamping frame provided with a pivot journaled in the said tongue, the said frame pressing and clamping with itsfront end the strap on the front end of the said tongue and a locking device held on the said plate for engaging the rear end of the said clamping with a pivot journaled in the said bearing and also provided with a front and rear bar, of, which the front ba'r serves to press the to front end of the strap against the front end of the tongue, and a button mounted to turn on the said plate and adapted to engage the said rear bar of the frame to lock the latter to the plate, substantially as shown and described.
ALFRED STEINER.
