This invention relates to typewriting machines and especially to that class of machines in which the type are grouped upon one or more carriers, as distinguished from machines in which each type is mounted independently, the most common form of machines of this class being that known as wheel machines, in which the type are placed upon the periphery or side of a wheel or segment and the latter` rotated or oscillated to bring the desired type to position. n
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, cheap and durable machine. of the class referred to, and especially to improve the type movement, and to this end my invention consists in various novel constructions and combinations of parts, all of which will be more particularly described in the specification and pointed out in the claims.
For a full understanding of my invention, a detailed description of a machine embodying the invention in its preferred form will now be given, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which` Figure l is a plan view of a type writingmachine constructed in accordance with my invention, the key springs being removed and the carriage shown in the position it occupies at the end of a line. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the machine. Fig. 3 is asection on the line 3-3 of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the key end of the machine, showing a modification. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a similar section showing another modification.
Referring now to Figs. l to 3, A is the base plate of the machine on which are mounted the side frames B, C. Atv the front or key end of the machine the side frames B, O are provided with slots l, in which is supported so as to slide longitudinally of the machine, a frame consisting of cross-bars D extending transversely of the machine and passing through the slots, in which they are held by caps 2, and a series of cam plates E secured to the cross-.bars D and extending longitudinal ly of the machine, these cam plates E being provided with a series of cam slots 3.
For moving the sliding frame by the cam slots, a series of keys of any suitable construction and movement may be` employed. I prefer to use lever keys as in the construction shown, in which a shaft F extends transversely of the machine, upon which is pivotally mounted a series of keys G provided with thev usual finger pieces and held normally in position above the cam. plates E, preferably by the means shown, consisting of key springs H secured to the keys and to a rod I extending across the machine and supported in standards projecting upward from the frames B, C. Each of the keys Gis providedwith a pin 4, which, upon the downward movement of the key, engages the cam surface in the slot'3 opposite to which the pin is positioned and moves the sliding frame longitudinally of the machine. The cam surfaces of the different slots 3 are so formed that the sliding frame will be moved varying distances, ac-
cording to the key operated, as shown in Fig.
3, andV the cam slots will preferably be constructed as shown with a straight extension 5 into which the pins passlwhen the sliding frame has been moved the* proper distance, so that a further movement of the key is permitted, during which movement theframe is stationary and locked in position by the engagement of the pin 4. with the straight portionof the cam slot.
The sliding frame is provided with a downwardly extending arm 6 which slidesupon a shaft 7 mounted in standards'8 upon the base plate A. Upon the shaft 7 at each side of the arm 6, are mounted coiled springs 9 held under tension between the standards ,8 and collars upon each side of the arm. Thexframe is thus held in a central position in the slots l and returned thereto by the springs 9 upon the release of a key. With the sliding frame IOO frame are transmitted to a type wheel by means of a rack and pinion, this forming a simple, cheap and satisfactory machine.
At the rear or wheel end of the machine, and preferably central thereto, as shown, the type wheel K is carried by a shaft L mounted in the frames B, C, this shaft carrying also a pinion M by which the type wheel is operated. This pinion M is engaged and rotated by a rack N carried by a bar O extending longitudinally of the machine and secured to and moving with the sliding frame. The type Wheel will preferably be constructed with three fonts of type, occupying different arcs upon its periphery, and for the purpose of shifting the type wheel for the different fonts, the following construction is employed: For the lower case-the font most frequently used-the rack N is in its central position, and may be shifted in both directions therefrom, the bar O being mounted to slide in a slotted block 11 secured to the rear cross-bar D of the sliding frame and provided atits front end with a spring plate forming a shifting key I). This spring plate is provided with three notches 12 adapted to engage the front cross-bar D and hold the bar O and rack N in either of three positions, and the rack N is preferably provided with stops 13 corresponding with its forward and rear positions. By this construction, the type wheel may be rotated from its central position for either the upper case or figures by raising the shift key P until the central notch 12 is released from the bar D, and slidingr the bar O until stopped by the engagement of one of the stops 13, with the support in which the bar moves when the spring plate forming the shift key will spring back into position to engage the cross-bar D by one of the outside notches and lock the rack in position upon the frame. With the type movement thus described, any suitable impression and feeding mechanism maybe employed. I have shown a simple and convenient construction, in which the carriage R, supportin g the platen S and the usual feed roll and guide bar, is pivotally mounted upon rear extensions of the side frames B, C and carries-a bar 1a extending the full length of the carriage and sliding in a standard 15 mounted on the base plate behind the carriage, the carriage R thus being held in an upright position. This bar 14 is engaged by an impression lever T pivoted in a standard upon t-he frame and operated by means of a space bar U extending across the machine beneath the keys G and supported by arms 16 pivoted in the side frames, as is usual in this class of construction. A certain amount of lost motion is provided between the impression lever and the bar llt to permit the feeding mechanism to be operated before the impression is made.
The feeding mechanism consists of the usual rack bar 17 carried by the carriage R and engaged by a driving pawl 18 and locking tooth 19 carried by a pawl carrier 2O sliding in supports 21 and held normally in its forward position with the pawl 18 in engagement with the rack, by means of spring The pawl carrier 2O is pivoted at its forward end to a swinging arm 23, which is provided with a cam surface 24 at its lower end engaged by a pin 25 carried by impression lever T. The swinging arm 23 is provided also with a cam surface 26 engaged by a pin 27 carried by the space key WV, by which the spacing is effected without the operation of the impression mechanism.
The operation of the parts will be readily understood from a brief description. Upon the movement of a key its pin 4. engages the corresponding cam slot 3 in one of the cam plates and moves the sliding frame longitudinally of the machine, thus rotating the type wheel K by means of the pinion M and rack N to position the wheel for the impression of the desired type. As the type wheel is positioned, the pin upon the key passes off the cam surface and into the extension 5, thus locking the type wheel in positionlduring thefurthermovement of the key. The space bar U has been depressed by the movement of the key, and is further depressed during this further movement of the key the pin 25 operating upon the swinging arm 23 to advance the pawl carrier 2O against the tension ofthe spring 22 and feed the carriage forward one tooth of the rack 17. As the carriage reaches the limit of the feed, the locking tooth 19 engages the rack and the carriage is locked firmly in position against movementin either direction, and the impression lever T rocks the carriage It by engagement with the bar la and throws the platen S into engagement with the type wheel for the impression. Upon the release of the key, all the parts are returned to their normal positions by their respective springs, the return ofthe pawl carrier 2O by the spring 22 returning also the impression lever T and space bar U by means of the cam 24 upon arm 23 operating upon pin"25. In the same manner, after a spacing movement, the space key 1V is returned to position by means of the cam 26 operating upon the pin 27. It will be seen that I provide a construction consisting of very few parts and those of great simplicity and cheapness, thus reducing the wear of parts and the liability of the machine to get out of order, and lessening greatly the cost of manufacture. `The cam plates E may be formed from metal plates with great rapidity and the assembling of the parts requires comparatively little skill and involves but little labor. W'hile I have shown cam plates provided with a slot for each key, this construction may readily be modified and two or more keys operate upon the same cam surface, the extent of movement of the sliding frame being determined by the position of the different keys relatively to the cam surface. a construction is shown in Figs. t and 5, in which each of the plates E is formed with but two cam slots, and of the four keys Gr Such t roo operating upon each cam plate, two keys engage each slot. Y In this construction the keys, as s hown, will preferably be placed upon opposite sides of the cam plate. This con struction reduces somewhat the cost of manufacture and also lessens the weight of the sliding frame.
Instead of forming the cam slots with cam surfaces of dierent inclinations, as shown in Fig. 3, all the cam surfaces may be of thev same inclination, the cam plates being arranged relatively to the different keys so as to produce the required movements of the sliding frame and the type wheel, as shown 1n Fig. G. In this construction, all the cam plates may, it' desired, be duplicates and the various movements of the type wheel be obtained wholly by variation in the relative p0- sitlons of the cam platesand keys, or the cam slots in eachplate may be duplicatesv but vary in the dilferent plates. I prefer, however, to use thepconstruction shown in F1g. 3, in which the cams vary in inclination and some are inclined reversely to others, the extent of movement of the frame being lessened by this latter feature.
. It will be understood that, while I have shown only the preferred form of machine embodying my invention, in which the slidlng frame is actuated by cams upon the frame engaged by pins upon the keys, and my in' v ention consists in part of such a construction the invention,'considered broadly, is not to be limited'to such an arrangement, but the arrangement of cam surfaces for the engagement and actuation of the frame by the keys may be varied without departing from the invention.
It will be understood that my invention is not to be limited to the exact'construction or method of operationof the parts shown and described, as it is evident that various modications may be made therein by one skilled in the art without departing from my invention, and the machine shown constitutes only the preferred form of embodiment of my invention, which includes broadly a movable frame constructed as described in the combination defined by the claims,independent of the special construction of the machine to which it is applied, or any special form of connections by which it operates the type carrier.
While I have shown the type as placed upon the periphery of a type wheel, it will be seen that my means for positioning the type may readily be applied to other forms of type carriers, and to wheels or segments in which the type are placed upon the side'. It will be understood, also, that by the expression lever keys pivoted to swing in a plane parallel with the line of movement of the frame used in the claims, I am not to be limited to aconstruction in which the planes of'movement of the keys and frame are exactly parallel, as it is obvious that some deviation from a parallel movement may be permitted without departing from the invention. By this expression, therefore, I mean and intend to cover all constructions inwhich the cam surfaces extend in the general line of movement of the keys, so that the line of movement of the frame extends longitudinally of the keys, whether such line of movement be straight or otherwise, as distinguished from constructionsin versely to the keys, so that the frame moves at substantially right angles to the keys.
What I claim isl. The combination with a type carrier, of a sliding frame, a series of lever keys engaging and actuating said frame by cam surfaces and pivoted to swing in a plane parallel with the line of movement of the frame, and connections between said frame and means for locking the type carrier in position when positioned by the movement of the frame and typecarrier for positioning the latter by the movement of the frame, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a type carrier, of a sliding frame, a series of lever keys engaging and actuating said frame by cam surfaces and pivoted to swingin a plane parallel with the line of movement of the frame, connections between said frame and type-carrier for positioning the latter by the movement of the frame, andan impression mechanism actuated by the keys, substantially as described.
3. The combination ywith a type carrier, of a sliding frame, a series of lever keys engaging and actuating said frame by cam surfaces and pivoted to swing in a plane parallel with the line of movement of the frame, connec. tions between said frame and type-carrier for positioning the latter by the movement of the frame, and impression and feeding mechanisms actuated bythe keys, substantially as described.
4. The combination with a type-carrier, of a sliding frame, a series of lever keys engaging and actuating said frameby cam surfaces having straight extensions and pivoted to .which the cam surfaces are arranged trans- IOO IIO
swing in a plane parallel with the line of movement of the frame, connections between said frame and type-carrier for positioning the latter by the movement of the frame, and
-an impression mechanism operated by the further movement of a key after the type carrier is positioned by the movement of the frame while the frame is held in position by thestraight extension of the cam surface, substantially as described.
5. The combination with a type-carrier, of a sliding frame, a series of lever keys engaging and actuating said frame by cam surfaces having straight extensions and pivoted to swing in a plane parallel with the line of movement of the frame, connections between said frame and type-carrier for positioning the latter by the movement ofthe frame, an impression mechanism operated by the further movement of a/key after the type carrier is positioned by the movement of the frame while the frame is heldin position by the the line of movement of the frame, and connectionsbetween said frame and type carrier for positioning the latter by the movement of the frame, substantially as described. 7. The combination with a type carrier, of a plate sliding in the direction of its own length and provided with one or more cam surfaces, one or more lever keys engaging said cam surfaces and pivoted to swing in a plane parallel with the line of movement of the plate, and connections between said plate and type carrier for positioning the latter by the movements of the plate, substantially as described.
8. The combination with a type carrier, of a plate sliding in the direction of its own length and provided with a cam surface, a series of keys engaging said cam surface at different points lengthwise of the plate, and acting upon the same portion of the cam surface duringa partotl their movement and connections between said plate and type carrier for positioning the latter by the movements of the plate,substantially as described. 9. The combination with a type carrier, of a sliding frame provided with a series of plates extending in the line of movement of the frame and each provided with one or more cam surfaces, aseries of lever keys moving said frame by engagement with said cam surfaces and pivoted to swing in a plane parallel with the line of movement of the frame, and connections between said frame and type carrier for positioning the latter by the movement of the frame, substantially as described. 10. The combination witha type carrier, of a sliding frame provided with a. series of plates extending in the line of movement of the frame, and each provided with one or more cam surfaces having straight extensions, a series of lever keys moving said frame by engagement with said cam surfaces and pivoted to swing in a plane parallelwith the line of movement of the frame, connections between said frame and type carrier for positioning the latter by the movements of the frame, and an impression mechanism operated by the further movement of a key over the straight extension of a cam surface after the type carrier is positioned by the movement of the frame, substantially as described. 1l. The combination with a type carrier, of
a sliding frame provided with a series of plates extending in theline of movement of the frame, and each provided with one or more cam surfaces having straight extensions, a series of lever keys moving said frame by engagement with said cam surfaces and pivoted to swing in a plane parallel with the line of movement of the frame, connections between said frame and type carrier for positioning the latter by the movements of the frame, and impression and feeding mechanisms operated by the further movement of a 'key over the straight extension of a cam surface after the type carrier is positioned by the movement of the frame, substantially as described.
l2. The combination with a type carrier, of side frames, B, C, cross bars D sliding in said frames, plates E supported by said cross bars and each provided with one or more cam slots, connections between the plates and type carrier, and a series of lever keys engaging the cam slots and pivoted to swing in a plane parallel with the line of movement of the frame, substantially as described.
13. The combination with a type Wheel or segment having a plurality of fonts of type arranged in diderent arcs, of side frames B, C, cross bars D sliding in said frames, plates E supported by said cross bars and provided with cam slots, connections between the plates and type carrier, a series of keys engaging the cam slots, bar O carried by said cross bars and havingalimited movement thereon, connections between said barand type wheel or segment for shifting the latter, and means for locking said bar in different positions relatively to the cross bars, substantially as described.
14. The combination with a type wheel or segment having a plurality of fonts of type arranged in different arcs, of side frames B, C, cross bars D sliding in said frames, plates E supported by said cross bars and provided with cam slots, connections between said plates and type wheel or segment, a series of keys engaging said cam slots, bar O carried by said cross bars and having a limited movement thereon, connections between said bar and type wheel or segment for shifting the latter, and spring shifting key P for locking the bar in different positions relatively to the cross bars, substantially as described.
