Be it known that I, GEORGE \V. DONNING, a citizen of the United States, residing at East I Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in T ype-Writer-Actuating Mechanism; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of my invention is to provide cooperating mechanisms for writing-mas chines, the several mechanisms being arranged to operate successively. In this construction a light touch of the key element is sufficient to start the first mechanism in op eration, after which the remaining mechanisms come successively into operation, whereby a train of movement results after the necessary impetus is effected upon the said first mechanism.
A further object is to provide means for producing a clear, accurate, and exact impression.
To these ends myinvention consists in the constructions, combinations, and arrangements hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, and in which similarreference-symbols indicate corresponding parts in the several views, Figure l is a detail perspective view showing particularly a carriage for a fiat-platen type-writer upon which is carried the type-bars and actuating mechanism, ribbon-spools and actuating mechanism, ribbon-guides and actuating mechanism, and transverse escapement mechanism. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional elevation. Fig. 3 is a sectional elcvationshowing m ore particularly the type-headactuatingandreleasingmechanism. Referring to the drawings in detail, A indicates the carriage of a writing-machine.
B indicates one of the ribbon-spools, at least one such spool being provided at each side of the carriage and said spools arranged to act alternately as feeding and receiving spools. Rock-arms N, preferably positioned adjacent each side of the frame, are maintained by springs .L in position to turn on a rod (Z A universal bar H is carried by the free ends of said rock-arms, and an arm 11 extends from each rock-arm. A link H is pivotally connected at its respective ends to the arm H and to a lever H which latter is constructed to actuate the ribbon spool through a pawl-and-ratchet mechanism H which need not be further described, as it is claimed in my copending application, Serial No. 107 ,471, and constitutes no part of my invention as claimed in this application.
Loosely mounted upon the universal bar H is a lever P, which acts upon depression of said universal bar to lower the ribbon-guide B through the intermediary of bell-crank levers P P and their connecting-link P An arm S, mounted on the universal bar II, is pivotally connected to a lever 0 arranged to actuate the transverse escapement C after the bar H has been depressed to apredetermined position, an adjustable contactscrew 0 providing means for regulating the point at which the transverse escapement will be actuated. This specific intermediary mechanism and transverse escapement need not be further referred to, since they are claimed ICO . type-head d.

D indicates one form of type-bar, which may be of any convenient shape, but is here shown U-shaped to constitute a housing for parts carried thereon. An enlargement d on the lower portion of this bar is provided withan opening to receive a pivot or fulcrum-rod for securing the bar to a guide-yoke or fulcrum-plate D3, formed in the base-plate. -A rock-arm d is pivoted at d in a bearing 61 on the type-bar. A springd is connected at its respective ends to the roek-arm d and to a pawl al for returning said parts to their normal position. A type-head-actuating link (1 has its lower end pivotally mounted at (Z on a projecting portion (1 of the rock-arm d and is pivotally connected at its upper end with an extension (Z on the type-head 01 which is pivotally secured to the type-bar D.
The rock-arm d is provided with a tailpiece for engaging a type-head shifter E, and said tailpiece may be formed of inclined parts d al as shown.
The pawl 61 is pivoted to the type-bar at d and is adapted to engage teeth cl on the As shown in Fig. 8, the pawl d is so arranged that when in engagement with the teeth of the type-head it will permit adjustment of the type-head in a direction contrary to the movement of a clocks hands, but will lock said type-head against opposite movement.
The type-head is provided with suitable type-holding means, such as sockets d and may have its semicircular face split, as at (Z to permit bending of the sockets for alining the type. While I have shown the typehead designed to carry three characters, it is obvious that a greater or less number of characters could be provided, as desired.

An important distinction of my guide-yoke over the usual straight pivot 0r cone-bearing is that it provides with a minimum of friction a broad guiding-surface for the typebar throughout its entire arc of movement, and by causing the sides D of the guideyoke to bear against the type-bar in a manner inappreciable as presenting resistance lateral play of the type-bar will be obviated. A rod D may be inserted in the groove D for pivotally supporting said type-bars. A spring 61 attached to the type-bar at 01 and I to a pin 01 on the frame, acts to return the type-bar to its normal upright position after being operated to print.
Properly to adjust the type-head d for printing any desiredone of the characters carried thereby I provide a shifter-bar E, preferably extending in the arc of a circle from one side to theother of the carriage and supported by a plurality of hangers 6 The hangers have their upper ends 6 secured to arms 6 provided at their rear ends with vertical pieces 6, which are pivotally connected to parallel arms f and f The arm f rests upon a transverse rod (1 and has a projecting end f, with which connects a spring f having its other end attached at f to the arm f for holding said latter arm against the transverse rod (1 as shown. A yoke-piece f carrying a key member F, is pivotally connected at f 3 and f respectively, with two parallel arms f and f which are supported on the transverse rods d and c1 and connected by a spring f Extending across the carriages is a shaft f which carries cams f arranged to engage bearingpieces 6 on the arms 6 A lug f secured on said shaft, engages the yoke-piece f, as clearly shown in Fig. 6.
\Vhen the key member F is depressed, the downward motion of the yoke-piece f and its engaged lug f causes the shaft f to turn, raising the shifter-bar E through the engagement of cams f with their bearing-pieces c A second yoke-piece f carrying a key memberF is provided for raising the shifter-barE sufficiently to actuate the type-head c1 and bring its third character into proper printing position. Thus when the shifter E is raised it will lie in front of the part d, and a downward movement of the type-bar D for printing will bring the front face of the part 61" quently-actuated type-bar. supported on parallel bars f and f, which are held against their bearings d and d by a springf and a lug f on the shaft f" engages with said yoke-piece, all in a manner similar to the connections of the previouslydescribed yoke-piece f For actuating the type-bar D, I provide a link (1 pivoted to the toe (Z of the type-bar at d and having its other end pivoted at 61 to a sublever (Z which is fulcrumed at al on the base. A link d is pivotally connected at (Z and d with said sublever and a key member D respectively. Said link is preferably provided with adjusting means, such as a turnbuckle (Z The key member is pivotally supported at and (Z with two parallel arms (Z and (Z respectively. Said parallel arms bear on the transverse rods (1 cl and are connected by a spring d, as clearly shown in Fig. 7 This construction forms the subject-matter of a divisional application hereof filed this date and need not be further described herein.
It will be noted thatv upon depressing the key member D the early motion of the rocking lever (Z will tend to move the pivot 61 of link (Z in a path approximately perpendicular to the length of said link. This motion will act to swing the link (1 about its pivotal connection 01 to the type-bar without ma terially rocking saidtype-bar, thus moving the link (Z and lever (Z from their initial locked position, in which their axis lay sub stantially in a common straight line. Upon further depression of key member D the rocking lever (Z acts to move the pivot 01 of link (Z in an are (about pivot d which more and more approaches a path parallel to the axis of said link (1 and thereby causes a progressive acceleration in the motion of the type-bar D about its pivot D During such movement of the type-bar D its rock-arm 61 engages the rod E and adjusts the type-head 01. As the key member D continues to descend the link c1 engages and carries down the universal bar H, and thereby starts the operation of the ribbon-guide and ribbonspool and then starts the operation of the transverse escapement. Thus the pivots 61 at, and d (see especially Fig. 7) are so arranged that the type-bar D is locked against any rebound from its upright position and can be rocked from such position only by depressing the key memberD The link 01 and adjacent end of the lever (1 constitute a toggle-joint, and, as shown, the pivot 01 is located slightly below a straight line passing through the centers of pivots (Z and d of said toggle. Any force applied to the type-bar D to rock it from its normal upright position will be transmitted through the pivot d to the link and obviously the effectiveness of that component of such force which tends to bend the toggle varies directly with the perpendicular distance from the pivot d to a right line passed through the centers of pivots c1 and 1 In the construction shown this perpendicular distance is made so small that the force is expended mainly in causing pressure on the pivots (1 (W, and (1 and is ineffective to bend the toggle against the friction engendered by such pressure. Of course by 1ocating all three pivotal points 61 CW, and 61 in a right line tangent to the path of the point (Z the entire force transmitted through the point d to link d would be expended in causing pressure on said pivots, or, again, by locating the pivot 61 above the right-line passing through the centers of pivots c1 and (Z the force transmitted through the pivot d to the link d would tend to maintain the toggle in its locked position.
Disposed to the rear of the type-bars and preferably in alinement with the type-heads is a type-head releasing or unlocking rod or bar G, against which the downward-extending portion (:1 of the pawl (1 contacts upon the return of the type-bar to its normal upright position. It is to be understood that when the portion (1 0f the pawl c1 contacts with this releasing or unlocking bar G the tooth d of the pawl is disengaged from the teeth d of the typehead, permitting the type-head to resume its normal position, such as that shown in. Fig. 8.
By maintaining the pawl 01 in contact with the releasing-rod G normally it is held out of engagement with the head, so that the same is normally free of movement, and it is not until the type-head is started on its downward course and the pawl leaves the releasing-bar G that it again engages the teeth (1 in the type-head to hold the same in the right position during the descent of the type-bar to print.
The rod or bar G is preferably supported on standards g, which are disposed on the base plate. The upper portion of these standards 9 are provided with a protecting-head g provided with an opening 9 The lower portion is provided with a foot 9 through which penetrates a securing-screw g Depending preferably from near the central portion of the standard 9 at the rear is a brace 9 having a foot 9 through which penetrates a screw g These two feet 9* and g are preferably secured to the fulcrum-plate D over the slots D2 to hold in place therein the rods, &c. To remove these rods, it is not necessary to take off the standards, as a rod may be pushed through the slot to force the other forward and out. Upon the outer edge of the standard near the center is a projecting bridge 6, in which is held and guided the rod E.
The parts--such as the type-bars connecting-links, parallel links, and arms-are all constructed to facilitate assembling and replacing. The parallel arms ff f f for instance, are cut out where they contact with the rods 01 d, as shown in Figs. 3 and 6, so that they may be removed with out disturbing other parts. The springs f f connecting therewith, serve to hold them in place and at the same time to take up any lost motion that may exist.
A point to be noted in connection with the type-head as differentiating it from those in common use is that in all shifting multiple type-heads the type-head is not locked in proper printing position relative to its bar while going down and locked coming up, so that should there be interference between two of the type-heads the type-head will be shifted on the descending typebar-that is, if the interference takes place before the platen is reached-while the type-head on the ascending type-bar is securely locked. Such arrangement is obviously objectionable in the presentation of a thoroughly-operative device. In the type-bar of the present invention the head is positively and securely locked when the type-bar is descending, so that the operator is sure of the correct character, and should two of the type-heads interfere the type-head on the returning type-bar, by reason of the construction of the type-head, unlocks and moves or rocks out of the path of the descending type-head, and just before the type-head resumes its normal position the locking device contacts with the type-head releaser or abutting surface and causes the type-head to swing back to its normal position.
In Figs. and 11 I have illustrated a novel form of combined line and letter finder to cooperate with the writing mechanism. This device is preferably disposed on the under side of the base or fulcrum plate D and is operated by a key I, preferably formed of three members i, '5 and i the member 1' being fulcrumed at 2' on the side plate A and the member i provided at its lower extending end i with a pivot i, with which is connected an arm or lever J, fulcrumed at j on the fulcrum-plate D The lever or arm J beyond the fulcrum-point j has a perforation at 3' in which is secured a spring j connecting at its other end with a pinj on the fulcrum-plate. Pivoted upon the end of the lever or arm J is a second arm K approximately of the outline shown in Fig. 11 to afford a cam-bearing surface 70, engaging aheaded screw serving to hold the arm K against the under side of the fulcrum-plate. A line and letter finder arm L is pivotally secured at 70 to the arm K and provided with a foot Z, having an incut l and a straight edge Z On the end of arm K is secured a spring 70 which serves to hold the line and letter finder arm L normally in proper horizontal position above the platen out of contact with the work in the machine. A guide M,'secured to the base-plate D car ries an inclined portion M, which is arranged to engage the upper surface of the arm L and guide said arm downward during its movement around to the printing-point. The cut-out portion Z of the foot Zpermits the operator to see the last printed letter. The corner Z is to point to the center of a letter to be inserted or struck. Now when the key I is depressed the arm J is moved in the direction indicated by the arrow, Fig. 11. This causes the curved arm K to be moved against the bearing-screw kieifecting withdrawal and swing of the arm L to a position under the fulcrum-plate, as indicated in dotted lines. When the arm L is swung out to a line, it contacts with the guide-piece M, and by reason of the inclined face thereof is thrust downward. This line and letter finder is of great simplicity and efficiency and insures accuracy to indicate exactly the printing-point. It is quickly drawn back to its normal position out of the area of operation when not needed. The lining-up strip or edge being projected toward the operator enables her to point the spot exactly. Where the operator v has to look down and over an edge, perfect pointing is not possible, notwithstanding that the scale edge may be sharp.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In awriting mechanism, the combination of type mechanism, a ribbon-feed, a ribbonguide, a transverse escapement, a common operating means, and intermediary mechanisms constructed to actuate said type mechanism, ribbon-feed, ribbon-guide, and transverse escapement, said intermediary mechanisms constructed and arranged to start the operation of the type mechanism prior to the operation of said ribbon-feed and ribbonguide, and to start the operation of the ribbon-feed and ribbon-guide prior to the operation of the transverse escapement, substantially as described.
2. In a writing mechanism, the combination of type mechanism, a ribbon-feed, a ribbonguide, a transverse escapement, a common operating means, and cooperating actuating mechanisms constructed to actuate said type mechanism, ribbon-feed, ribbon-guide and transverse escapemen t, said cooperatin g actuating mechanisms constructed and'arranged to start the operation of the type mechanism prior to the operation of said ribbon-feed and ribbon-guide, and to start the operation of the ribbon-feed and ribbon-guide prior to the operation of the transverse escapement, substantially as described.
3. In writing mechanism, the combination of a type-bar, a type-head pivotally carried thereon and provided with a plurality of type, means constructed completely to actuate said type-head toward the outset of its downward movement, means independent of the actuating means and constructed to lock said type-' head upon completion of its actuation, and means constructed and arranged to operate said actuating mechanism, substantially as described.
4. In Writing mechanism, the combination of a type-bar, a type-head pivotally carried thereon and having a plurality of type, means constructed completely to actuate the typehead toward the outset of its arc of movement, such actuating means comprising a link connected with the type-head, a rocking arm supporting said link and carrying a depending tailpiece, means independent of said actuating means and constructed to lock said type-head, and means arranged to engage said tailpiece to effect movement of the typehead, substantially as described.
5. In writing mechanism, the combination of a type-bar formed to constitute a housing for the parts carried thereon, a type-head pivotally carried on said type-bar and provided with a plurality of type,mechanism constructed to completely actuate the type-head toward the outset of its are of movement, means independent of the actuating means and constructed to lock said type-head upon completion of its actuation, and means constructed and arranged to operate said actuating mechanism, substantially as described.
6. In writing mechanism, the combination of a type-bar having its upper portion formed to constitute a housing for parts carried thereon, and its lower portion constituting bearingsurfaces, a type-head pivotally carried on said type-bar and provided with a plurality of type, mechanism constructed completely to actuate the type-head toward the outset of its arc of movement, means independent of the actuating means and constructed to lock said type-head upon completion of its actuation, and means constructed and arranged to operate such actuating mechanism, substantially as described.
7. In writing mechanism, the combination of a type-bar, a type-head pivotally carried thereon and provided with a plurality of type, mechanism constructed completely to actuate the type-head toward the outset of its arc of movement, means independent of the actuating means and constructed to lock said type-head upon completion of its actuation, means constructed to effect return of the parts to normal position, and means constructed and arranged to operate such actuating mechanism, substantially as described.
8. In Writing mechanism, the combination of a type-bar, a type-head pivotally carried thereon and provided with a plurality of type, mechanism constructed completely to actuate said type-head toward the outset of its arc of movement, means independent of the actuating means and constructed to lock said typehead upon completion of its actuation, means constructed to operate such actuating mechanism, and means constructed and arranged to effect accelerated return of the parts to normal position, substantially as described.
9. In Writing mechanism, the combination of a type-bar, a type-head pivotally carried thereon and provided with type, guiding and supporting means for said type-bar, mechanism constructed completely to actuate the type-head toward the outset of its arc of movement, means independent of the actuating means and constructed to lock said type-head upon completion of its actuation, and means constructed and arranged to operate such actuating mechanism, substantially as described.
10.- In Writing mechanism, the combination of a type-bar, a type-head pivotally carried thereon and provided with type, a guide-yoke arranged to support and guide said type-bar, mechanism constructed completely to actuate the type-head toward the outset of its arc of movement, means independent of the actuating means and constructed to lock said type-head upon completion of its actuation, and means constructed and arranged to operate such actuating mechanism, substantially as described.
11. In writing mechanism, the combination of a type-bar, a type-head pivotally carried thereon and provided with type, mechanism constructed completely to actuate the typeheadtoward the outset of its downward stroke,
means independent of the actuating meansand constructed to lock said type-head upon completion of its actuation, means constructed to operate such actuating mechair ism, and key mechanism constructed and arranged to effect operation of the type-bar, substantially as described.
12. In writing mechanism, the combination of a type-bar, a type-head pivotally carried thereon and provided with type, mechanism ate the type-head toward the outset of its arc of movement, means independent of the actuating means and constructed to lock said type head upon completion of its actuation, means constructed to operate such actuating mechanism, key mechanism arranged to effect operation of said type-bar, said key mechanism comprising a key member, a link pivotally connected thereto, a rocking sub lever connected with said link, and a second link connecting the rocking sublever and the type-bar, substantially as described.
, 13. In writing mechanism, the combination of a type-bar, a type-head pivotally carried thereon and provided with type, mechanism constructed completely to actuate the typehead toward the outset of its arc of movement, means independent of the actuating means and constructed to lock said type-head upon completion of its actuation, means con structed to operate such actuating mechanism, key mechanism arranged to eifect operation of the type-bar, said key mechanism comprising a key member, a sublever, a link connecting said key member and sublever and provided with adjusting means, and a link connecting said sublever and type-bar, substantially as described.
14. In writin g mechanism, the combination of a type-bar, a type-head pivotally carried thereon and provided with a plurality of type, and constituted of a segment with an outer, curved periphery, mechanism constructed to completely actuate said type-head toward the outset of its arc of movement, means independent of the actuating means and construct ed to lock said type-head upon completion of its actuation, and means constructed and arranged to operate such actuating mechanism, substantially as described.
15. In writing mechanism, the combination of a type-bar, a type-head pivotally carried thereon and provided with teeth, means constructed to actuate the type-head,a pawl pivotally mounted 011 the typebar and adapted to engage said teeth to effect locking of the same, and means constructed to operate such locking device, substantially as described.
16. In writing mechanism, the combination of a type-bar, a type-head pivotally carried thereon and provided with teeth, a pawl pivotally carried on the type-bar and adapted to ed completely to actuate the type-head into locking engagement with said pawl toward the outset of its arc of movement, means constrncted to operate such actuating mechanism, and means constructed and arranged to effect disengagement of the pawl from locking engagement with said type-head, substantially as described.
18. In writing mechanism, the combination of a type bar, a type-head pivotally carried thereon, a pawl pivotally carried on the type bar and adapted normally to engage the typehead to lock the same, mechanism constructed completely to actuate the type-head into locking engagement with said pawl toward the outset of its arc of movement, and an abutment-snrface disposed in the path of said pawl and arranged to effect movement thereof to disengage it from lockin g engagement with said type-head, substantially as described.
19. In Writing mechanism, the combination of a type -bar, a type-head pivotally carried thereon, mechanism constructed completely to actuate said type-head toward the outset of its arc of movement, said mechanism comprising a link connected with the type-head, a rocking arm pivotally supporting said link and provided with a depending portion, op erating mechanism arranged to be engaged by said depending portion, said depending portion constructed to ride over said operating mechanism and thereby effect movement of said rocking arm and type-head,and means independent of said actuating means constructed to lock said type head in position, substantially as described.
20. In writing mechanism, the combination of a type-bar, a type-head pivotally carried thereon, mechanism constructed completely to actuate said type-head toward the outset of its arc of movement, said mechanism comprising a link connected with the type-head, a rocking arm pivotally supporting said link and provided with a depending portion, operating mechanism arranged to be engaged by said depending portion, said depending portion constructed to ride over said operating mechanism and thereby effect movement of said rocking arm and type-head, a pawl pivotally carried on said type-bar and adapted to engage said type-head and lock the same, and a spring connecting said pawl and rocking arm to maintain said two elements in operative position, substantially as described.
21. In writing mechanism, the combination of a type-bar, a type-head pivotally carried the reon,mechanism constructed to completely actuate said type-head toward the outset of its arc of movement, said mechanism comprising a link connected with the type-head, a rocking arm pivotally supporting said link and provided with a depending portion, operating mechanism arranged to be engaged by said depending portion, said depending portion constructed to ride over said operating mechanism and thereby effect movement of said rocking arm and type-head, a pawl pivotally carried on said type-bar and adapted to engage said type-head and lock the same, a spring connecting said pawl and rocking arm to maintain said two elements in operative position, and means arranged to actuate said pawl and remove it from looking engagement with the type-head,substantially as described.
22. In writing mechanism, the combination of a type-bar, a type-head pivotally carried thereon, mechanism constructed completely to actuate said type-head toward the outset of its arc of movement, said mechanism comprising a link connected with the type-head, a rocking arm pivotally supporting said link and provided with a depending portion, operating mechanism arranged to be engaged by said depending portion, said depending portion constructed to ride over said operating mechanism and thereby effect movement of said rocking arm and type-head, a pawl pivotally carried on said type-bar and adapted to engage said type-head and lock the same, and an abutment arranged in the path of said pawl and constructed to remove said pawl from engagement with the type-head, substantially as described.
23. In writing mechanism, the combination of a type-bar, a type-head pivotally carried thereon and provided with a plurality of type, mechanism constructed to completely actuate said type-head toward the outset of its arc of movement, means independent of the actuating means and constructed to lock said typehea'd upon completion of its actuation, means constructed to operate such actuating mechanism, said operating means comprising a shifting rod adjacent to the type-bar and means constructed to operate said shifting rod, substantially as described.
24. In writing mechanism, the combination of a type-bar, a type-head pivotally carried thereon and provided with a plurality of type, mechanism constructed completely to actuate said type-head toward the outset of its are of movement, means independent of the actuating means and constructed to lock said typehead upon completion of its actuation, means constructed to operate such actuating mechanism, said operating means comprising a shifting rod adjacent to the type-bar, and shifting keys constructed and arranged to opcrate said shifting rod, substantially as described.
25. In writing mechanism, the combination of a type-bar, a type-head pivotally carried thereon and provided with a plurality of type, mechanism constructed completely to actuate said type-head toward the outset of its arc of movement, means independent of the actuating means and constructed to lock said typehead upon completion of its actuation, means constructed to operate such actuating mechanism, said operating means comprising a shifting rod, hangers arranged to support said shifting rod, and means constructed to effect movement of said shifting rod to varying heights or positions, substantially as described.
