Description

NrrED STATES lPain-irrt Finca.
JOHN BURT, OF IRON RIVER-MICHIGAN.
PACKING-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 529,705, dated November 27, 1 894. Application filed September 4, 1894. Serial No. 522,045. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that'I, JOHN BURT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Iron River, in the county of Iron and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing-Cases; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which 1t appertains to make and use the same.
Myinvention relates to packing cases.
The object of my invention is to providea packing case having a series of compartments with a detachable bottom and cover and a fastening device for securing them together for shipment as a single crate or case. l Y ln the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification Figure l is a perspective View of the packing case composed of three compartments and showing the device for holding and locking them in position. Figs. 2, 3, 4 and 5 aredetail views.
Referring more particularly to the drawings A denotes the cover for the packing case; B, the bottom and 0, C, C, the compartments. D, D, D, denote a series of links of a length to correspond with the depth of each com-v partment or slightly to exceed the same, united to form a chain, and passing through eyes or rings c,.c, c, secured near the upper fourcorners of eachcompartmen t. The lower link is fixedly secured to the bottom piece through the ring or eye attached thereto, and the upper link is adapted to engage With the binding rods E E, the ends of which project over the sides of the cover A as shown in Fig. l. Said rods have rigidly secured thereto about midway of their length flat metal hasps E E which overlap when in position and register with a staple a rigidly secured toy said cover.
F denotes a padlock for securing the hasps in position and locking the fastening which holds the compartments together.
The cover A is shown in detail in Fig. 4
and is provided with bails or handles c at each end, and on top with lugs c2 between which the hasps are fitted to prevent their sidewise movement.
The bottom piece B is shown in detail in Fig. 3 and is provided with rings or eyes c near each corner, or said rings may be secured .as shown at the ends of dat binding rods rigidly secured to the under side of said bottom piece the projecting vends of which hold said rings. The compartment is shown in detail in Fig. Zand is provided on the inside with brackets or rests c which support the compartment above, and on the outside at the upper four corners with rings or eyes c. Around the upper edges of the walls on the outside a wire frame is formed and said edges turnedV over the wire, giving a neat finish and strengthening the walls of the compartlnent. Said walls Hare outwardly near the top sufficiently to admit the bottom of other compartments. The compartments are rectangular in shape and of the same dimensions and are arranged together without reference to number or order. The drawings show three compartments but itv is evident that the number may be decreased or it may be increased by adding to the number of links D. .y
The drawings/represent a metallic packing case but I may make the compartments of veneer and the cover and bottom pieces ot' metal. After the compartments are packed for shipping they are arranged together by first placing one compartment on the bottom piece and passing the links through the rings on each side thereof. Another compartment is then fitted on top and rests on the bracket c. The links are then passed through the rings on each side of the second box and so on until the upper compartment isplaced in position When the cover is placed over it and the links engaged with the projecting ends of the binding rods.
Having shown and described my invention, what Iclaim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A packing case composed of compartments supported one upon the other and arranged between a relatively flat top and bottom cover both common to each compartment, and means for clamping said covers and the intermediate compartments together.
2. In a packing case composed of compart- In testimony whereof I hereby affix my sigments supported one upon the other and pronature in presence of two Witnesses. vided with a cover common to all the comf 1 bination of the links, the bindingrods hav- JOHN BURI' 5 ing the hasps and means for locking said \Vitnesses:
