Be it known that I, EMANUEL BARTH, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bunch-Shapers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

This invention has relation to those devices which are employed as aids to the hands and eyes of operators in the manufacture of cigars.

The bunch of filler which constitutes the body of a cigar is sometimes made by the f`1ngers of the operator without other assistance, but commonly it is shaped by the fingers in a mold or gage or shaper which is calculated to assist the eye and hands and to facilitate the production of uniform bunches. One mold or gage is sometimes used for different shapes of cigars, the skill of the operative being relied upon to form the desired shape with the assistance of the mold or gage. In other cases a separate mold or gage is used for every shape to be made and as a consequence a factory must be provided with a great number of such molds or gages. Moreover every operative has his own, individual peculiarities and although several operatives may be working with molds or gages of the same kind they will turn out cigars which differ more or less in shape.

It is the object ofr this invention to produce a mold, gage or shaper which shall be readily adjustable for different shapes of cigars whereby it shall be necessary for each operative to have only one shaper thereby saving much expense and storage room and whereby the foreman of a shop can regulate each shaper according to the peculiarities of the operative and thereby secure uniform results from many Workmen.

In the drawingsz-Figure l is a perspective view of a Shaper constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line xof Figs. 1 and 3, and Fig. 3 is a partial transverse section on the line fy-y of Fig. l.

A standard A which is of suitable shape and size and is adapted to be secured to a bench or table, has a forwardly projecting tongue B which is preferably of a width about equal to one-fourthorone-third,more orless,of the length of an ordinary cigar,and is subs1 antially flat as to its upper surface except that it may be curved upwardly at its outer end. A plate C, which is curved in crosssection, substantially as shown in Figs. l and 3, and has a length substantially equal to that of the longest cigar to be made, is secured to the tongue B, preferably by a screw D which passes down wardly through the tongue B into a tongue E which projects rearwardly and centrally from the curved plate C, whereby the plate C may be replaced readily by one which is shorter or longer, if such be required.

At one side or at each side of the tongue B Ais a series of independently movable sections which together with the tongue B, make up the body of the Shaper. These independent sections are preferably formed as fingers f,f, which are pivoted together on each side of the tongue B, by a bolt or screw F which has a smooth shank and is threaded into the side of the tongue B or standard A. The fingers f, f, are preferably of the same size and shape and have their free ends curved upwardly somewhat, as shown in Fig. l so that they form, with the plate O, a substantially halfround mold.

Various means might be employed for adjusting the sections or fingers f,f, but the means represented in the drawings are preferred. These means comprise, for each side of the tongue B, a pliable strip G preferably of spring metal, which is firmly held at its inner end and supports the free ends of the ngersjf, and one or moreset screws, as at H, which pass through the plate C and may be adjusted-to determine the curvature of the free portion of the strip G and consequently the relative positions of the fingers f, f. Preferably each end of the plate C is provided with two or more threaded holes c, c, for the reception of the set-screw H in order to give a wider range of variation. It will be observed that the axis of curvature of the upper portion of the plate C approximately coincides with the pivoted axis of the sections IOC f, f, so that the curved ends of the sections lie close to the plate in whatever position they may be set.

The mode of use of the improved shaper will be readily understood by those couver- 4sant with the manufacture of cigars as now commonly carried on. The filler is placed in the half-round mold and the proper quantity determined by the operative, his eye being assisted by the edge of the plate C. ',lhen with the fingers the filler is shaped, the operation being facilitated by the formation of the body of the mold as determined by the relative adjustment ot' the sections f,f. Finally the Shaper bunch of filler is removed and the binder and Wrapper applied. For Varying the shape of the mold the screws H, I-I, are set in the proper. holes c, c, and are adjusted up or down to give the required curvature to the strip or strips G, G, upon which the fingers f,f, are supported. It a shorter cigar is to be made a shorter plate C may be substituted for the one in use or one or more of the tingersf, f, may be turned back.

I Claim as my inventionl. In acigar bunch Shaper, the combination of a curved plate and a body to cooperate therewith in the formation of a mold, said body being composed of a series ot ind ependently adjustable sections, substantially as shown and described.

2. Inacigar bunch shaper, the combination of a standard, a curved plate supported by said standard, and a series of independently adjustable sections supported by said standard and forming abody to cooperate with said plate, substantially as shown and described.

3. In acigar bunch shaper, the combination of a standard having a forwardly projecting tongue, a curved plate disposed at the end of said tongue, and a series of sections adjustably secured at one side of said tongue and forming a body to cooperate With said curved plate, and means to adjust said sections, substantially as shown and described.

4. In a cigar bunch Shaper, the combination of a standard, a curved plate supported by said standard, a series of independently movable sections forminga body to cooperate with said curved plate, a pliable strip supported by said standard and upon which said movable sections rest, and means to determine the curvatureof said strip, substantially as shown and described.

5. In a cigar bunch Shaper, the combination of a standard, a curved plate supported by said standard, a pliable strip also supported at one end by said standard and parallel with saidplate, and an adj usting screw upon which the free end of said strip rests, substantially as shown and described.
