M. P. BIGELGW.
BRIDLE BIT.
No. 529,472. Patented Nov. 20, 1894.
Ji'waw "AirnNr @rrrcn MELVIN F. BIGELOYV, OF ALDEN, IOlVA.
BRIDLE-BIT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 529,472, dated November 20, 1894.
Application filed February 3, 1894:- Serial No. 499,042- (No model.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MELVIN F. BIGELOW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alden, county of Hardin, State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Bridle-Bit, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings hereto attached and made a part thereof.
My invention has relation to bits, and my object is to provide a bit adapted for use especially in controlling wild and unruly horses, which will be efficient, effective in its operation, durable in use and cheap to manufacture.
In the drawings, Figure 1, is a perspective view of my invention, and Fig. 2, a side View of the same.
Referring to the drawings, A denotes the cross bar or mouth piece of the bit, having its central portion depressed as at a, said central depressed portion being provided with a covering or ball B, preferably of rubber. Secured to the ends of the mouth piece A are the cheek pieces H, having rings E arranged at their top for securing the overhead check to them, and being also provided with rings D at their bottom for the purpose of attaching lines when driving a wild horse.
F, F indicate slots in the cheek pieces to which are secured a chin strap which passes under the mouth of the horse.
. For ordinary driving I provide rings 0, to which the reins may be attached, said rings being secured to the mouth piece by means of a hinge I and a swivel G.
lVhen it is desired to use my device in driving a wild horse, a strap is secured to the slots F, F, under the horses chin. The driving reins are fastened to the rings D, while the overdraw check reins are secured in the rings E. Should the horse become excited, he can be readily controlled by pulling on the driving lines which are fastened to the rings D. This will throw the curved portion of the mouth piece of the bit against the roof of the horses mouth, and readily subdue him, the rubber covering preventing the roof of the mouth from being cut or abraded. It will be noted that the chin strap and overdraw check reins serve to prevent the horse from holding the bit in his teeth, thereby preventing the successful operation of the device.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A bit comprising a mouth piece provided with a depressed central portion said central portion being covered with a ball of nonabrading material, cheek pieces secured to said mouth piece and provided with means at one end for securing to them driving lines, and having means at the other end for securing an overdraw check thereto, a chin strap slot on each cheek piece, and an auxiliary driving ring loosely connected to each cheek piece.
