CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 529,335, dated November 13, 1894;.
Application filed July 5, 1894:.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Mourns thus, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oar-Couplers, of which the following is a specification.
This improvement relates to that class of car-couplers especially adapted for use in connection with freight cars, and the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts whereby the car is rendered self coupling, and the link guided into position without being touched by the hand and whereby it may be quickly uncoupled from the ground or the top of the car.
The nature of the invention is fully described below, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the end of a freight car with my coupler applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal vertical section. Fig. 3 is a front elevation. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal vertical section showing a modification. Fig. 5 is a cross vertical section of the same taken on line 00, Fig. l.

A represents the draw-head secured in the 0 ordinary manner to the under side of the car a. The forward portion of the upper wallof the drawhead is provided with the longitudinal slot B, the walls of which support a horizontal pivot B. Hanging from this pivotis 5 a latch or tongue which is composed of two parts, 0 and G, bolted together at b. The dividing line between these two parts intersects the pivot B, and it is by means of this construction that the tongue is placed upon the pivot which is fast in or integral with the draw-head. The portion G of the tongue or latch is provided with a recess D, from the bottom of which extends an upright D, and the portion 0 is provided with a hook-shaped 5 extension 0. By inserting the extension 0 in the recess D beyond the upright D and swinging the part 0' up against the part C, the bolt b may be applied to secure the parts together on opposite sides of the pivot. The lower end of the tongue 0 lies in the recess A in the lower wall of the draw-head against Serial No, 516,533. (N0 model.)
the shoulder A". The link S as it enters the draw-head pushes back the tongue and assumes the position shown in Fig. 2.
A screw or bolt E extends rearward from the rear side of the tongue 0, and is connected by a chain E with an arm F extending from and rigidly secured to the horizontal rocking bar H supported in bearings h secured to the car. The ends of this bar H are curved forward into handles H so that a person standing on the ground can grasp either handle and rock the bar, swinging up the arm F and, by means of the chain connection E, swinging up rearwardly the tongue 0, releasingthe link. In order that the same operation may be accomplished by a person on the roof of a car. an elbow lever I is pivoted to a bracket J secured to the car near its top, and a chain 1' connects the lower arm of the elbow 7o lever with the outer end of the arm F.
In order that the link may be guided vertically into the drawheads of cars of different heights, the lower wall of the draw-head is perforated at K, and in this perforation a post L plays vertically, said post having secured to or integral with its upper end a platform or lift L, whose forward edge is preferably beveled or curved, as shown in Fig. 2. This part is supported by the inwardly projecting arm N of So the lever N pivoted at n to the side of the draw-head. The rear end of this lever N is pivotally attached to the lower end of the link P whose upper end is pivotally secured to the lever B, pivoted at r to the car. By depressing the outer end or handle R, the arm N of the lever is raised, thus raising the platform or lift L, and hence the link S, to the desired height without touching the link with the hand.
In the modification shown in Figs. 4 and 5, an integral tongue W is provided, swinging from a pin or bolt W inserted in the drawhead and held therein by a nut V.
Having thus fully described my invention, 5 what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The hereinbefore described improved car coupling, consisting essentially of the drawhead A, the upper wall thereof being provided with the longitudinal slot B within which is the pivot B, and the lower wall of said draw-head being provided with the recess A having the shoulder A; the latch or tongue composed of the two parts 0 and O bolted together as shown, the dividing line he- 5 tween said parts intersecting the pivot B,the parts 0 of the tongue or latch being provided with a recess D from which extends an upright D and the portion 0 of said tongue being provided with the hook shaped extension IO 0''; the bolt E extending rearwardly from the tongue and connected with a rocking bar secured to the car; the post L playing vertically in the perforation K in the lower wall of the draw-head, theplatforrn or lift L integral with said post; the lever N N bent as 15 shown and pivotally secured to the side of the draw-head, and a lever connected with said lever N N and pivoted to the cam, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
