COMBINED HORSE-COLLAR AND HAMES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 528,868, dated November 6,1894.

Application filed June 8,1894- To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HERMAN EOKARDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Horse- Collar and Hames; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in whicht Figure 1 is a front View of a combined collar and hames constructed in accordance with my lnvention Fig. 2, a detail perspective view of the combined neck pad or saddle support and connection for the upper ends of the hames; Fig. 3, a section on the line 0c0c of Flg. l; and Fig. 4, a horizontal section of the fastener at the lower ends of the hames.

The object of my invention is to improve the construction of hames and more particularly those of the class with which the collar,

or a substitute therefor in the form of pads is permanently attached, and to this end, my invention consists in the parts constructed and combined, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.

In the carrying of my invention into practice I employ a pair of hames A and A that have the usual general shape, and areconstructed preferably of metal. Said hames however, are less bulky than is c0mmon,but they are made amply strong by the employment upon each of a rib or projection upon its innerside, that runs lengthwise thereof at its transverse center.

A shoulder pad or cushion B, grooved to fit the rib of the hame is attached to each, to serve the purpose of an ordinary collar. Said pads are made of cork which possesses all needed strength and elasticity, and is peculiarly well adapted for the purpose by reason of its lightness and non-absorption of moisture.

At the lower end of one hame is provided a straight horizontal extension 0 which is chambered or made hollow for the reception of a corresponding extension D of the other hame, which has upon its front face a series of ratchet-shaped teeth at and d that are Serial No. 513,931. (No model.)

I adapted for engagement by a latch E that is attached to the front side of the hollow extension O. Said latch E consists of a spring to the extension 0 and at its free end has a rearwardly projecting lip or lug e that is arranged alongside of the end of said extension and stands in the path of the teeth d. A ring e, or other suitable means is provided upon the latch to enable the same to be readily disengaged from the teeth, when it is desired.

It will be observed, that, by the construction described,the only strain which the latch E has to sustain, is such as may be caused by an outward tendencyin a straight line, of the toothed extension D. All other strains are borne by the extension 0 which surrounds or incloses the part D. v

The hames are flexibly connected at their upper ends by two upwardly arched bars or links F and F that are pivotally united-at their inner ends by means of a pin G which passes through overlapping, perforated ends fandf, and each of which links at its outer end, has two arms f and f to embrace its hame to which it is pivotally connected by means of a bolt H that passes through the hame and said arms.

By pivoting the links Fand F to each other, and to the hames it is possible to move the straight parts of the fastening at the lower ends of the hames, into and out of engagement rectilinearly, and thus avoid any binding of said parts and enable the same to be fitted closely to each other so that there will be no looseness in the fastening. As the pivots of the inner ends of the links are in a plane well above the points of connection of said links with the hames, the links will rise and fall according as the parts 0 and D of the fastener are moved toward, or away from each other.

To permit ofadjustment beyond the limits permitted by the pivoting of the links, as de- 5 scribed, a vertical row of holes a and a is provided in each hame for vertical adjustment, while for horizontal adjustment a horizontal row of holes f and f is formed in the armsf andf of each link.

A neck pad or saddle I is suspended from the links F and F at their point of pivotal plate that is secured at one end by a screw 55- 2 teases connection and the same pin that unites them serves toconn-ect .the pad thereto, the ends of said pin being contained in openings in two lugs 'i and t that rise from the upper side of the pad upon opposite sides of said links.

It will be seen that by reason of the flexibility afforded by the pivoting of the links F and F, the pad can readily adapt itself to the motions of the animal and thus will not rub or chafe him.

Such features of my invention as are applicable to hames other than those permanently attached to collars or collar pads, I deem myself entitled to.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is In combination with the two hames, having each a shoulder pad or cushion attached, the straight hollow horizontal extension from one hame, at the lower end thereof, adapted into the path of the teeth of the other, and 25 connections between the upper ends of the hames that permit lateral adjustment thereat corresponding with a like adjustment at the lower ends, which connections consist of two upwardly arched links that at their 30 higher ends are pivoted together, and each at its lower end is pivoted to a hame, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
