R. S. PEABODY.

No. 528,555. Patented Nov. 5, 1894.
Fig 2' hrm/MEV UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT SIN GLETON PEABODY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
VISE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 528,556, dated November 6, 1894.
Application filed May l1, 1894. Serial No. 510,852. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT SINGLEToN PEA- BODY, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of, Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Vises, of which the following is a specification.
The principal object of my present invention is to providea simple, durable, efiicient, andv comparatively inexpensive vise in which a free open space is afforded centrally through the vise for the accommodation of a rod, wire, or other article of any length, and to this end, my invention, stated in general terms, consists of a vise comprising jaws whereof one is fixed and whereof each is provided at its lateral edges and intermediate of its length with the members or ears of a hinge coupling, and .cams or eccentrics interposed between the depending portions of the jaws and located beneath and in alignment with the hinge-couplings.
The nature, characteristic features, and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, and in which-- Figure 1, is a perspective View of a vise embodying features of my invention. Fig. 2, is a transverse sectional view taken cen trallyihrough the ears of the hinge-couplings illustrated in Fig 1, and Fig. 3, is a similar view taken on a plane above the cams or eccentrics that are located in alignment with the hinge-couplings, as shown in Fig. 1.
In the drawings, 1 and 2, are jaws whereof each is provided at its lateral edges and intermediate of its length with ears 3 and 4, which are journaled together by coupling pins 5, and constitute a pair of hinge-cou plings with a space between them, Fig. 2.
6 and 7, are eccentrics or cams disposed Y substantially in alignment with the hingecouplings and journaled in -the example shown in the drawings to the depending portion of the fixed jaw and adapted to bear upon and shift the kdepending portion of the other jaw;
As illustrated in the accompanying drawA ings, thel cams and 7 are so proportionedor shaped, as that the operating levers 8 and 9 are turned in opposite directions, that is onel in the drawings.
From the foregoing description, it will be apparent that my improved vise is exceedingly simple in constructionand that a central opening as 11, is aorded through the hinge-coupling and through the mechanism for clamping and releasing the j awsy for the reception of a wire, rod, or other article of any length.
Having thus described the nature and objects of my present invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A vise comprising jaws whereof one is fixed and whereof each is provided at its lateral edges with integral ears hinged or journaled together, and means located in alignment with the ears and adapted to operate and clamp the jaws, substantially as described.
2. A vise comprising jaws whereof one is ixed and whereof each is provided at its lateral edges and intermediate of its length with the members or ears of a hinge-coupling, and cams or eccentrics interposed between the depending portions of the jaws and located beneath and in alignment with the hinge-couplings,substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name.
ROBERT SINGLETON PEABODY.
