SPECIFICATION forming part-of Letters Patent-No.S-QBSB., dated October 30, 'v1-894.
Appuaeon eea rebmry- 12, isst/'stati Naf-199.370. (metaal To all whom it may concern:-
Beit known that 1,-RBERT `L.-HAR RIS:,`a
citizen` of the United States, residing in the city, county, andState yof New York, have invented au Improvement in Tubes forCement Foundations or Underground Structures, of which the following. is a specification... f
In Letters PatentNo. 454,771, granted4 to me December 8, 1891, a tube is represented as adapted to being forced down into the earth' and to receive within it, a secondary tube through which water may be forced to establish a circulation'between one tubv and a distant tube or tubes' and also throng 'which cementing materialmay be'forcedl in forming the underground structure or foundation, and
.a rubber packing' betweenthe outer and the secondary tube is also represented andan annular flapto lessen the tendency ofthe water or 'cement to pass 11p-immediately around the' i outer pipe,
In my present invention I have combined with the inlet pipe for wateror cementing material a combined valve and deflector together with al support for the valve and deector,
whereby the saine can be raised orlowered t0` the desired point and will either dgect' the water or cement laterally and approi'rimately horizontally or allow such water or cement to pass downwardly below the pipe, and this deing material flowing upwardly into the inlet pipe when such celnenting material isforcedy down through some other pipe into the sub-v tion representing the tubes made use of byyme without the annularap and with'the deflector in aposition to direct the water or cementing material laterally. Figiis a similar view with the flap in position and the vdeflecting valve lowered so that the material introduced through the pipe is free to passdown as the same may be directed.
The outer tube A is preferably sunk to the desired depth through the earth, sand or other material, andthe rubber plug D which surrounds the lower part of the secondary tube B, is of a size to lit into the tube A, and there is a' nut 3 by which the rubber plug D can be compressed e'ndwise'and spread laterally to a G which issimilar to atubularcodpling with.
vertical slots 6 therein-'which give a freelatxeral escape to-water` o r 'cementing material forced 'down through` the tube B';and in this case G-there is a seat 7j above the valve andL deflector H, and below such valve andi'detlector isa support I, preferably in theform of a ring, that is screwed-into the lower end y of the "case Gand can be adj usted vertically to raise the`vaive and. deflector H'into near `proximity to the seatI 7 or to lower such valve 1 l anddeiect'or kto or below the lower .ends of y.
the slots 6,"and the annular flap Eis similar to that `in the aforesaid patent `and is introduced between theupper end of the delector case G and the rubber plug D. i
When `the annular flapE is not attached in place and the ring support I is screwed to raise the deflector valve H into near proxim-.
ity,to the seat 7, the water or the cement which may beintroduced through the pipe B isdelected 4'outwardly and more nearly' horizontal so 'as' to be spread, and when water is used to wash the loose materials andform channels,
as in Patent No. 464,771, a space is obtained between one pipe and another for the insertion of the cementing material, or where cementing material is to be directed horizontally or nearly so between 'loose stones orrubble, this deilector H is raised or lowered to a greaterbr less extent so as'to'direct the materials as they issue from the lower end of the pipe B.
If the eementing 'materials are to be forced i downwardly or beyond the lower end ofthe pipe B, the ring support I is unscrewed sufficiently to allow the detiect'or valve H to descend toward or below the lower ends of the slots 6, so that the water or comenting mate- Y rials that may be forced down thepipeB receive a downward direction, and the annular ilap E is advantageously applied around and roo' above the case G to prevent the `materials passing up around the pipe.
When the pipe B is not-used in forcing i down wateror cementing material, the ball H ringin' additionfto' or which is preferably lighter than the water will rise or be forced up against the seat 7 by any upflowing current or pressure acting through the opening of the ring or support, so as to prevent water iiowingnp through the pipe B and to prevenir cementing material passinginto the pipeBwhen such cementing-material may be forced down some adjacent or more distant pipe. I find that this valve is convenient forpreventing theupiiow of cementing material,
but in cases where it is desired to use the pipe B for an uptlow of water itis not necessaryto lwithdraw the pipe B and take out the' vaive H, because the samemay be held down in any suitable manner such as by a' small rod introduced through the pipeB ,which will rest upon the valve without .materially obstructing the upward flow pf the Water; and
I remark that the ringer support for the valve may have several openings through the in place of thecentral, opening.
1 I claim as myv invention-fj..
1. In-an apparatus for making'foundatio'ns or inclosures'l by cementing material, the pipe B, in. combination with the deflector case 'screwed upo'n thelower'end thereof and havnglateral opeuin gs, thedeiiector valve within 'the case andan adjustable ring support belowthe valve, substantially asset forth.
2. The combination in an-apparatus for ,making foundations-or in'closures by cement-- .ing material, of the pipe B extending tothe p y g surface `tit' (the earth, the deiiecton case 'selcured-"11o-'the end of "Lthe'pip'e 'andvprovided `witlilateral` openings, a lvalve and deiiector Y withinthe case, a ring support screwed intoi o p enings,
the end of the case, and an annular flap connected at the upper end ofthe case, substantially as set forth,
3 The combination in an apparatus tor making foundations or inclosures by cementingfmaterial, -ot the pipe A andthe pipe B within the sameand extending to the surface of Vthe earth, the dedector case secured to the 45 end of the pipe and provided with lateral a'valve and deflector' within the case, a support in nular Bap connected at the upper endof the case,`an d a forth.
4:. In anapparatus for making foundations or i nclosu'res by cementing materials, th'e pipe v 4the detl-ector case 55 ,screwed upon the lower end thereof and hav! ing lateral openings, the de'flector valve within the case, and a'supportlbelow the valvesub, ,stantially asset forth. d v t 5. `In an apparatus for making foundations 6e B, 'in combination' with or ,inclosures by cementing material, pipes through which waterocementing material' maybeforced .down into the earth, anda' valve at the lower end-of each pipe to prevent -the`cementingmaterial forced down through 65 one pipe rising in tofeither of ythe other pipes,
substan'tially'as' set forth.
