FRUIT JAR.
No. 528.315. Patented Oct. 30, 1894.

NITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
JOHN H. WILLIAMS, OF ALBION, NEW YORK.
FRUIT-JAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 528,315, dated October 30, 1894. Application filed December 7, 1891- Serial No. 414.266. (No model.)
To and whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN H. WILLIAMS, of Alb1on,1n the county of Orleans and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Fruit-Jars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the drawings accompanying this specification.
My invention consists of a fruit jar constructed with a vent hole through the shoulder outside of the neck of the jar, as hereinafter described.
In the drawings-Figure l is a central, vertical section of the upper portion of a fruit jar showing my improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing the cover in place.
This invention relates to the construction of the jar whereby it can be easily opened when sealed.
A indicates the jar, provided with a neck a, packing shoulder b, and screw thread 0. These parts are of ordinary form and construction.
My improvement consists in forming in the shoulder b, an orifice d, which extends through to the interior of the jar. ered by the ordinary packing ring f, which rests on top of the shoulder and is pressed down by the cover g and screw clamp h. The object is to facilitate the opening of the jar, which is accomplished by running a knife or other instrument under the packing ring, thereby raising the latter above the orifice, allowing the air to enter to relieve the atmospheric pressure. To locate the point where the knife is to be inserted, the jar may be formed with a mark it, consisting of a boss blown in the glass, or a color streak in the same opposite to the orifice. The orifice may be made in any suitable way, such as blowing the glass with a small nipple which is This orifice is cov-' neck, with a passage through the outer flange but all such cases require a special construction of the jar different from the standard form now in use adapted to receive a screw clamp for forcing the cover down.
The object of my invention is to provide means whereby the jar of ordinary construction can be vented, and this is accomplished by forming the orifice directly through the packing shoulder outside of the ordinary neck.
Having described my invention I do not claim-broadly a vent hole in a fruit jar.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Afruit jar having a reduced neck forming a flat shoulder around its month, said shoulder being provided with an upright vent orifice therethrough; combined with a flat packing ring resting upon and of the same width as said shoulder and closing the orifice, a cover whose body stands over the neck and whose downturned edge has a sharp corner resting on the packing ring outside the orifice, a tubular clamp screwing on the body of the jar, extending over the outer edge of said packingring, and having an inturned upper end embracing the edge of said cover, and a mark on said body of the jar below the lower edge of the clamp and opposite the orifice, as and for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN H. WILLIAMS. Witnesses:
