No. 528,134. Patented 001;. so, 1894.
A K x WITNESSES m n a m: uoam PETERS 0.. wismrguqon, q. a,
UNITED. STATES PATENT. OFFIcE.
WILLIAM G. ALEXANDER, OF BOZEMAN,MONTANA.
BELL-.RINIGI'NG MECHANISM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 528,134, dated October so, 1894. 1
Application filed May 3, 1894. Serial No. 509,937. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM G. ALEXAN- DER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bozernan, in the county of Gallatin and State of Montana, have invented certain new i and useful Improvements in Bell-Ringing Mechanisms, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains-to make and use the same. I
My invention relates to bell-ringing mechanisms and particularly to such mechanisms of this kind as are designed for ringing or sounding alarmibells as for instance for indicating the presence of fires in cities and towns where the strokes must be positive, uniform and at proper intervals.
The objects of my invention are to produce a simple mechanism to be operated in any simple manner and which will be positive in its operation, uniform in its strokes and will not interfere with the free vibrations of thebell.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion of ahouse, such for instance as an engine house, the same having a bell and mechanism for sounding the same constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail in perspective of the rotary hammer shaft; Fig. 3, a sectional view through the joint between the same and hammer rods.
Like numerals indicate like parts in all the figures f the drawings.
In the present instance 1 designates the roof-timbers of a house and upon the same I locate a pairof aligning horizontal bearings 2 in which is arranged for free rotation ahorizontal shaft 3 having at one end a beveled gear wheel 4. In suit-able vertical aligning bearings 5 arranged in the structure, I journal a vertical operating shaft 6 that leads from a point above the ground floor to the roof and is there provided with a beveled gear 7, a similar gear occupying the lower end of the shaft. The upper gear 7 intermeshes with the gear 4 of the rotary shaft 3 and the lower gear 7 intermeshes with and is driven by the power gear 8 that is arranged upon a horizontal shaft 9 supported in bearings 10. The gear 8 is provided with a handle 11 by which it may be revolved. If desired other means may be employed for giving motion to the shaft 3 and I. do not limit my invention in thisregard, but have merely illustrated it to show one manner of operating the mechanism.
Above the inner end of the shaft 3 and supported in any desired manner as for instance by a timber 12 is the bell j Arranged on the end of the shaft 3 is a pair of longitudinal slotted arms 14, theinner ends of which overlap, so that the bar as a whole is freely adjustable by means of a pair of set bolts 15 and their nuts. The outer ends of the arm 14 are slotted or recessed at diagonally opposite points and their corners are at these points cut away as indicated at 16. Between the walls of each recess there are pivoted at 17 hammer rods 18 whose inner ends are rounded as indicated at 19 and whose outer ends are provided with hammer heads 20'. Cushions 21 of rubber areinterposed between the inner ends of the rods 18 and the bottoms of the recesses.
The end of the shaft 3 projects through the slots in the arms between the set bolts and for suchpurpose is reduced and threaded at 22, thus forming a shoulder 23 at the inner end of the reduced portion. A nut or washer 24= is seated against the shoulder and a similar nut or washer 25 is against the outer side of the arms and is bound upon by an outer nut 26, threaded on the end of the shaft so that the bar as a Whole is fixed upon and must revolve with the shaft.
This completes the construction of the device and the operation is as follows: As the shaft 6 is revolved so, also, is the shaft 2, the
i do
sition immediately after passing the bell, the return being accomplished by the spring cushion aided by the centrifugal force.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I provide a very simple mechanism for positively, uniformly and at intervals sounding alarm bells which mechanism is adjustable and therefore adapted to occupy different positions with relation to various bells so as to secure the best results.
What I claim is- 1. In a bell ringing mechanism, the combination of a rotary shaft, arranged below and at a right angle to the bell to be rung, means for rotating the same, a bar carried by the shaft below the bell, and loose hammer rods pivoted below the bell to the bar and terminating at their outer ends in heads, substantially as specified.
2. In a bell ringing mechanism the combination of a shaft arranged below at right angles to the bell, means for rotating the shaft, a bar carried by and arranged at right angles to the shaft and recessed at diametrically opposite corners, hammer rods having heads pivoted in the recesses below the bell and elastic cushions seated in the bottoms of the recesses to support the rods when at an angle to the bar, substantially as specified.
3. In a bell ringing mechanism the combination of a rotary shaft arranged and terminating below'the bell, a pair of slotted overlapping arms receiving and secured to the shaft, set bolts arranged in the slots at opposite sides of the shaft and headed hammer rods pivoted to the outerends of the bar and adapted to contact with the bell, substantially as specified.
4:- In a bell ringing mechanism the combination of a horizontal shaft having a reduced threaded end, a bar comprising slotted arms overlapped and arranged on said end, washers at opposite sides of the bar, a nut on the end of the shaft against the outer washer and pivoted hammer carrying rods for the ends of the bar, substantially as specified.
5. In bell ringing mechanism the combination of a lower shaft, means for rotating the same, a bar carried by the shaftand disposed at a right angle thereto, hammer rods having heads and pivoted to the ends of the bar, stops in front of the rods for limiting their forward movement and cushions in the rear of the rods, substantially as specified.
6. In a bell ringing mechanism, a horizon tal shaft, a gear carried thereby, a hammer carrying bar arranged on the shaft, hammer rods loosely pivoted to the ends of the rod, a vertical shaft, gears on the upper and lower ends thereof, a lower power shaft, a hand wheel having teeth for engaging the lower gear, all combined and operating, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM G. ALEXANDER.
