Be it known that I, JOHN MCMAHEL, a citi- Zen of the United States, and a resident of New Albany, in the county of Floyd and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Alarms for Bicycles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to alarm-bells for bicycles, and the object thereof is to provide a simple and effective device of this class, and one which may be attached to the handle-bar, and which is operated by means of one of the handles, which is made revoluble on said bar for this purpose; and with this and other objects in View, the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of my improvement applied to the handle-bar of a bicycle, and Fig. 2 a perspective view of one of the details of the construction.

In the accompanying drawings, A represents one end of the handle-bar of the bicycle, which is provided with a shaft B, on which is mounted a revoluble handle O, and said handle is provided with a head D, on the perimeter of which are formed inwardly-directed ratchet-teeth E.

Mounted on the end of the handle-bar Ais a tube F, and secured to, or formed on the upper side thereof is a longitudinal housing G, the inner end of which is closed, as shown at g, and the outer end of which. is open. Formed in the upper side of the housing Gis a longitudinal slot g', and mounted within said housing and projecting through the outer open end thereof is a bar H, on the inner end of which is a vertical head or shoulder K, which projects through the slot g', and secured to the said head or shoulder is a spring L, the free end of which is provided with a knocker M. Within the housing G is a spiral spring O, one end of which bears upon the head or shoulder K, and secured to the tube F,

or to the opposite sides of the housing G, are standards P, but one of which is shown, which support a bell or gong R, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, and said bell or gong may be secured to said standards in any desired manner.

The operation will be readily understood' from the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. All that is necessary to sound the bell or gong is to revolve or turn the handle C, and as said handle is turned the bar H, which is provided at its free end with a triangular head h, will engage with the ratchet-teeth E and to be rapidly moved back and forth, said bar being forced backward by the ratchetteeth E, on the head D, and forward by the spring O, and at each forward motion thereof the knocker M will strike the bell or gong R; and it will thus be seen that I provide a simple and effective alarm for bicycles, which may be operated without removing the hand from the handle, and with comparatively no effort.

My invention is not limited to the exact form, construction, and arrangement of parts shown and described; and I therefore reserve the right to make all such alterations therein, and modifications thereof, as fairly come within the scope of the invention.

Having fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. An alarm bell or gong, for bicycles, comprising a tube adapted to be secured to the handle bar, a gong supported on said tube, a housing connected with said tube the inner end of which is closed, and the outer end of which is open, a spring operated bar located in said housing, and projecting from the open end thereof, the inner end of said bar being provided with a head which projects through a slot, in the upper side of the housing,'and said head being provided with a spring to which is secured a knocker, substantially as shown and described.

2. An alarm bell or gong, for bicycles, comprising a tube adapted to be secured to the handle bar, a gong supported on said tube, a housing connected with said tube the inner end of which is closed, and the outer end of which is open, a spring operated bar located in said housing, and projecting from the open IOO end thereof, the inner end of -said bar being provided with a head which projects through a slot, in the upper side of the housing, and said head being provided with a spring to Which is secured a knocker, said bar being adapted to be operated by the handle which is revolubly mounted on the handle bar, of the bicycle, and provided With a head in Which are formed ratchet teeth, substantially as shown and described.
