Description

NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERNEST STOULS, OF PARIS, FRANCE.
CATHODE FOR ELECTROLYTIC PROCESSES AND METHOD OF MAKING SAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 528,04=2,-dated October 23, 1894. Application filed January I2, 1894. $erial No. 496,680. (No specimens.) Patentedin France June 22, 1893, No. 231,042.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ERNEST STOULS, a citizen of the French Republic, residing at Paris, in the Department of the Seine, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cathodes for Electrolytic Processes and Methods of Making Same, of which the following is a specification.
Patent granted in France on the 22d of June, 1893, No. 231,042.
In galvanoplasticor electrolytic operations molds, cores or cathodes are employed coated with a conducting body. Heretofore the body most used for this purpose was plombagine which is better than all others on account of its consistency, to allow a regular working. This coating of plombagine has always been put on dry or in combination with oil, grease or some other fatty substance. This process of applying the coating is defective and does not give the least guarantee for the work or for its maintenance.
My invention consistsin replacing the same in the following manner: To plombagine I add milk in a sufficient quantity to render the same liquid and I put a coat of this mixture over the mold or core while making the latter revolve so as to have the layer as regular and uniform as possible which I rub during the rotary motion until perfect dryness ensues. After the operation has been finished I have a perfectly dry, bright, shining mandrel which cannot be attacked by the acids.
When the piece cannot be mounted upon the'points of a lathe the coating is laid with a brush so as to obtain also a layer as uniform as possible. This manner of applying the coating has the advantage not only to givea bright and shining mandrel or core but also to prevent all adherence of the deposit to the cathode.
I claim-- 1. As an article of manufacture a mold, core or cathode having a covering of plombagine and milk, substantially as described.
2. The herein described method consisting of taking a mold, core or cathode, coating the same with plombagine diluted in milk and rubbing the coating until dry, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my handin presence of two witnesses.
ERNEST STOULS.
