WILLIAM H. MOSELEY, 0F SPARTA, WISCONSIN.
CLOTHES-DRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 527,705, dated October 16, 1894.
Application filed November 15, 1893. Renewed September 1'7, 1894. Serial No. 523,270. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. MOSELEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sparta, in the county of Monroe and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Briers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,'and to the letters of reference marked ghereon, which form a part of this specifica- This invention relates to clothes driers which are adapted to rotate about a vertical axis and have a tilting movement to and from a perpendicular to bring the highest lines The object of the invention is to provide a simple, convenient and efficient means for tilting the drier and locking the same when in a vertical or upright position.
A further objectof the invention is to obtain a maximum length and number of lines withoutinterference of the one with the other, the drier being composed essentially of an upper and lower portion of similar construcso disposed that the lines of the one will'not be parallel with the'lines of the other, thereby preventing interference of the clothes hung on the upper set of lines with the clothes suspended from the lower set of lines, and at the same time allowing a free circulation of air which is essential to a speedy and thorough drying of the clothes.
The invention consists of the novel structure and peculiar combination of the parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and which are shown in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the locking mechanism for securing the vertical shaft of the drier to the post or support when the said shaft is in a vertical position, the operation of the said locking mechanism being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a modification of the tilting mechanism and latch bar.
The drier is composed of a central block or hub A, arms B, and lines C, the latter being stretched on the arms B. The armsBare-obliquely disposed and are secured to the block or hub A between their ends by suitable fastenings, screws, bolts or spikes. The preferable way is shown in Fig. 3, in which angle fastenings 'm are fastened to the post E, the bent ends extending over and retaining the said reel arms in place. In this construction the reel arms are not pierced by the fastenings, hence are not weakened. The number of the arms is not essential andmay be varied at will. The line connecting the lower portion of the arms serves, in a measure to equalize the tension on the lines connecting the upper portion of the said arms. The upper and lower portions of the arms are braced by the stays D.
The post or support E has the drier journaled thereto so as to revolve about a vertical axis, the shaft G depending therefrom constituting the said axis. A plate H secured to the post, forms a bearing for the upper part of the shaft to turn in and a support for the hub or block A to tilt upon. The lower end of the shaft obtains a bearing in the latch bar J, and is headed to prevent the latch bar slipping off. The latch bar J extends transversely through the post E and is adapted to turn therein to engage or disengage its bent end It from the stopI. This latch bar is also adapted to move longitudinally through the post to effect a tilting of the drier and bring the same when tilted, to an upright position. The tilting of the drier is limited by the extent of movement of the latch bar.
In Fig. 3, the latch bar is shown passing through a staple n driven in the side of the post and its bent end is engaged by a pin P thrust through a staple 0 secured to the post. The latch bar may be of wire, strap iron or other suitable material. The plate H has but a single shank and an oblong opening is formed in the head thereof to permit of the tilting of the reel.
Having thus described my invention, what with a stop I to retain the vertical shaftin an I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Lctupright position, substantially as shown and ters Patent, is described.

secured to the top thereof, and forming a 1 T bearing for a vertical shaft, of a latch bar ILLIAM MOSELEX' forming a bearing for the lower end of the Witnesses: vertical shaft, and having its engaging and E. E. OLIN, J12, IO looped end turned on itself, so as to engage S. R. BURROUGHS.
