IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-SHADES.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 52,765, dated February 20, 1866.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I MA'rHEw STEWART, of the city of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shades for Lamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction of the same, reference being had to the accomlianying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents the inner side of onehalf of the said improved shade divided vertically; Fig 2, a plan view of the upper end of the same When the reflector is removed, and Fig. 3 a horizontal section of the picture or transparency holding frame, cut on the dotted line x y of Fig. l, like letters of reference indicating the same parts when in the different iigures.
The nature of my invention consists, substantially as hereinaf'ter described and set forth, in the production of acircular shade for a lamp, having vertical sides for exhibitingv the usual ornamental pictures or transparencies, surmounted by a detached reflector in the form of a hollow frustum of a cone, the whole being supported upon the lamp by means of arms radiating` from a central thiinble, and bent so as to pass up vertically within the shade and be detachably secured to the sides thereof' by means of shoulders and screw-nuts, whereby greater facility and scope is obtained for inserting, changing, or displacing the pictures or transparencies, and a more substantial and durable support given to the whole shade.
In the drawings, A is the reflector; B, the vertical sides, and G C C the supporting-arms radiating from the usual thimble D.
The vertical sides B consist of two sheetmetal rims, b b2, each formed so as to have an annular groove, b3 b4, for the reception of the upper and lowered ges, respectively, of a frame, b5, which supports the pictures or transparencies in a vertical position in the shade.
The frame b5 (see Figs. l and 3) consists of a single strip of thin sheet metal or stiff paper, and is about two and three-quarters of an inch Wide, (more or less,) and of a length corresponding with the length of either of the grooves b3 or b4. It has three or more openings cut through it for displaying the pictures or transparencies c e, and these latter are adjustably secured by means of vertical crosspictures or transparencies e to be inserted or d withdrawn with ready facility, and in this condition the frame b5 is bent into a circle and inserted down into the groove b4 of the rim b2, and then the rim b applied over it, so as to receive the upper edge of the frame b5 within its groove b3, as seen in Fig. l.
The supporting-arms C U C radiate from the central thimble, D, in the usual manner, but instead of each arm ending in the short hook, which is loosely slipped into a short tube on the under side of the inclined shade, as heretofore, these arms C are each bent vertically upward at a point close to the low er rim, b2, and extend a little above theupper rim, b',
i the vertical portion passing through the lugs b lf, which project at the inner edges of the said rims for the purpose as seen in Figs. l and 2. A small shoulder, c', is formed near the upper end of each of the arms C, and a screw-thread is cut above it7 on which a small thunib-and-tinger nut, c2, works. The lower rim, b2, rests on the arms (l at the bends, and the upper ri1n,b, rests on the shoulders c', while the nuts c2 keep them securely together, with the frame b5 between them, as before described.
The redeetor A is in the common form of a hollow conical frustum, and may be made 0f thin sheet metal, porcelain, ground glass, or any other suitable material. It rests loosely upon the ripper side of the rim b', as seen in Fig. l.
This is a very strong and substantial shade for a lamp, and its vertical sides B afford a more extensive and better position for displaying the pictures or transparencies than the tapering shades in common use, and at the same time present a ready means of changing the latter. with facility at any time, as the reflector is detached, and the nuts c2 and rim b are easily removed for the purpose of changing either the frame b5 or the pictures e; and, moreover, the mode of attaching the shade to the arms C, as described, keeps allthe parts securely and firmly together whether the shade be on or off the lamp.
Having thus fully described my improved lamp-shade, What I claim as new therein of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A circular shade having the vertical sides B, consisting of the two grooved rims, b b2, and a picture-holding frame, b5, between them, the same being constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. ln combination with the said vertical sides B, bending the ends of the arms C into the vertical positions shown, together with their respective shoulders c,and screw-nuts c2, as and for the purposes described.
3. Makin g the picture or transparency holding frame b5 in one entire piece, and irrespeci MATHEW STEWART.
