Be it known that I, MARTIN HARDSOCG, a

citizen of the United States, residing at Otskilled in the art to which it appertains" to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in picks; and it has for its general object to provide a simple and practical pick head embodying such a construction that it may be readily placed upon a handle in a position fixed with respect to the handle so as to cf- 'fectually prevent it from moving upon or fiyin g ofi the same. i

The head A, is cast or otherwise formed in one piece as better shown in Fig. 1, of metal having sulficient malleability, and it comprises the body G, which may be of any suitable form and is provided with an eye a, to receive the handle, and the lugs or ears D, which extend laterally from the inner side of the head and are disposed on opposite sides of the eye, as shown. These lugs or ears D, are arranged such a distance apart as to permit of the handle be ing introduced and adjusted between them and they are slightly bowed as shown so that 'i tsend. I therefore make when they are forced in against the handle, as presently described, their free portions will take into the handle and will securely fix the head thereon, so as'to prevent it from flying off, in practice.

In order to prevent the head from moving out of its original position at right angles to the handle, afterthe lugs or ears have been forced. in againstthe handle, as just de scribed, I provide the said lugs upon their inner sides with ribs as I). These ribs 1), are arranged in the longitudinal center of the lugs and extend the major portion of the length thereof, and they are designed and adapted to take into the handle when the lugs are forced inwardly so i as toefiectually prevent the head from rocking or moving upon the handle, which is a desideratum.

In the practice of the invention, when it is desired to mount the head upon the handle, the handle is introduced between the lugs and is pushed into the eye. The head is then adjusted until it occupies a position exactly in-againstthe handle. so as to fix the head againstmovingupon and flying ofi of the handle. r As will be readily appreciated from the foregoing description taken together with the drawings, my improved pick-head may be readily mounted and fixed upon a handle in a 'position at right angles thereto; without the employment of skilled labor; and, as is obvious, much better work can be accomplished by a pick, the head of which remains in its true position, than with one, the head of which does not rest at right angles to the handle. I am well aware that it is old to provide the shank of a screw driver or similarimplement with a soft or ductile metal bolster of circularform in cross section, having longitudinal feathers on its inner side; the said bolster being adapted to receive a handle and i be fixed thereon by the inward swaging of no claim to such construction but.
