OMBING MACHINE No. 5g7,243.
Patented Oct. 9, 1894.

ARTHR LISTER HAGGAS `AND ROBERT HEATON, OE OAKWORTH, ENGLAND.
COMBINGMACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 527,243, dated October 9, 1 894. Application tiled March 3, `1894. Serial No. 502,184. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that we, ARTHUR LIsTER HAG- GAs and ROBERT HEA'roN, subjects of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Oakworth, near Keighley, in the county of York, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Oombing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
Our inventionrelates to an improved arrangement and combination of means for regulating the pressure upon the drawing-off rollers of combing machines whereby the pressure is applied to these rollers in such a manner that the wool, or other fiber and the leathers passing between these said rollers are more evenly acted upon whether a large or only a small sliver of said wool or other ber is thus passing between same by which means the durability of these leathers is greatly enhanced.
To carry our invention into eect we make use of the devices illustrated in the accompanying sheet of drawings.
Figure 1 is an elevation partly in section of the drawingoic rollers of a comb together with such of their bearing parts with our improvements applied as are necessary to illustrate our invention. Fig. 2 is a top view of a portion of a combing-machine showing two pairs of drawing-ofi? rollers with our improvements attached.
The drawing-off rollers a and b are mounted in their usual bearings c and d, the roller a, being stationary except its rotary motion, while the roller b revolves in movable blocks e e so that its position, relatively with the roller a, may vary in accordance with the quantity of fiber or the thickness of the sliver and the leather f (which for the sake of clearness is only shown in broken lines), as is well understood; pressure, for forcing the roller b against or toward the roller abeing imparted through the blocks e e and the cross-bar g in manner common and well known. However, in accordance with our invention the pressure thus imparted to the bar g is obtained from the weight h which is adjustably att tached to the lever 7c pivoted at m to the bearing 'n carried by the framework o, of the combing machine. The lever his coupled to the lever p by means of the rod q and spring r', said rod q passing loosely through an open- Lments 0f the leather f.
ing in the end of this lever p so that its downward force or pull thereon is exercised through the spring r, while an adjusting nuts mounted upon the screwed end of the rod q is employed for regulating the resilience of the said spring fr. This lever p is pivoted at t to the tixin g t carried by the bearings c and d, and is bent at p in order that it may not interfere with the mounting 01 any of the move- The arm p2 of the lever 1o is arranged to press or force the spring u against the cross bar g, the screw 'u and movable nut w being for adjusting or regulating the spring u.
By the arrangement of levers above described the pressure upon the roller b is not increased by anyincrease in the thickness of thesliver or fiber passing between it and the roller a since at all times the pressure of the weight h is constant, and as such pressure is exerted at the central part of the bar g, the roller h does not press one edge of the leather f more than the other so that instead of one part of said leathers being more quickly worn out than another, as is the case when the usual pressure regulating means are employed, all parts of them deteriorate evenly so that the term of their efficiency is greatly prolonged.
To prevent excessive vibration of the levers p and lo which may be caused by the movements of the rollerb, we employ the springs u and fr so that the resilience of these springs may counteract said vibratory movements.
Such being the obj ect and nature of our invention, what we claim is In a combing machine, the combination of drawing-oft rollers, movable bearings for one of said rollers, a cross-pressure bar, a bent lever having one arm arranged to act against the middle of said bar, a spring interposed between said arm of the lever and the bar, a weighted lever, a rod connected therewith and passing loosely through the bent lever, and a spring interposed between the lever and a nut on the rod.
