Description

(No Model.)
W. L. DORANQ SUSPBNDBR' BUCKLE.
Patented Oct. 9,1894.
Zgz'irae ses: v Inf 75 Wwf UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM L. DORAN, OF NIAGARA, CANADA.
SUSPENDER-BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 527,170, dated October 9, 1894.
' Application filed July 12, 1894- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. DORAN, a citizen of the Dominion ofOanada, residing at Niagara, in the county of Welland and Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certaln new and useful Improvements in Suspender-Buckles; and I do declare thefollowing to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in suspender buckles, and it has for its general ob ect to provide a simple and strong buckle adapted to be securely fixed in position upon a shoulder strap or other part of a'pair of suspenders without cutting, indenting, or otherwise injuring the same, and one embodying a clamp adapted to be readily loosened to permit free adjustment of the buckle and also adapted, when in its normal operative position, to serve as a guard to prevent acasual disengagement of the eye of the suspender tabs from the hook of the buckle.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1, is a perspective view illustrating my improved buckle as fixed in position upon a suspender strap. Fig. 2, is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3, is'a detail perspective view of the frame of m y-im proved buckle, and Fig. 4., is a similar view of the clamp.
Referring by letter to said drawings :A, indicates the frame of my improved buckle, and B, indicates the clamp which is designed and adapted to fix the frame in position upon a suspender strap as will be presently described. The said frame A, is preferably made of wire; and in forming the same I first bend apiece of wire upon itself at a point midway of its length and shape the same so as to form the hook a, and the shank b, as shown. I then carry the branches of the wire laterally in opposite directions to form the lower side 0, of the frame and then upwardly to form the ends 61, of the same, after which I bend the said branches downwardly against the frame ends cl, to form the bearings e, and then inwardly to form the upper side f, of the Serial No. 517,336. (No model.)
frame. The ends of the wire which form the upper sidef, of the frame preferably rest in a plane in front of the ends d, and they are connected for the sake of strength by a barrel as g. r v
The clamp B, of the buckle is also preferably made of wire, and in forming the same I first bend the piece of wire to form the tongue or finger h, or lower side of the clamp and the ends t'. I then pass the branches of the wire through the bearings e, of the frame A, and bend them downwardly and inwardly as shown at j, and carry the ends of the same inwardly toward each other and surround them by a barrel to formthe upper side 10, of the clamp. When the clampB, is in the position shown in Fig. 1, this upper side is, rests above and slightly in rear of the plane of the upper side f, of the frame A, and serves to securely clamp the suspender strap which is arranged as shown and prevent movement of the buckle thereon, while when the tongue h, or lower side of the clamp is raised to a position at right angles to the frame, the upper a position above and slightly in front of the upper side f, of the frame A, so as to permit of the suspender strap '0, moving freely between said sides f, it, when the buckle is adjusted. When the lower side of tongue h, of the clamp is lowered to the position shown in Fig. 1, the upper side It, of said clamp will spring over the strap and upper sidef, of the frame into the position above and slightly in rear of the plane of the said side f, so as to securely clamp the-strap and hold the lower side or tongue h, in the position shown in Fig. 1, in order to enable itto prevent the eye Z, of the tabs from being casually disengaged from the hook a. By reason of the upper side is, of the clamp springing into position as above described when the tongue h, is swung into its operative position, said tongue will be securely held against casual movement. The tongue however is adapted to serve as a lever and by pressing the sameout- Wardly, the upper side k, may be readily raised to a position above and in front of the si'def, of frame, to permit adjustment of the buckle on the strap 0.
It will be seen from the foregoing that the side It, of the clamp, will be caused to assume clamp B, of my improved buckle is adapted to securely fix the buckle in position upon a web strap, without cutting, indenting, tearing, or otherwise injuring the same, and that my buckle is therefore superior to those which are necessarily provided with teeth or barbs to engage the strap. It will also be noticed that by reason of the peculiar construction of my buckle, the clamp B, may be raised and the buckle adjusted on the strap without the necessity of disconnecting the tab eye Z, from the hook a, which is a desideratum.
I have described my improved buckle as formed of wire as such material is best suited to the purpose. I do not desire however to be understood as confining myself to making the buckle of wire as it may be made of any other suitable material.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A buckle frame made from a piece of wire and composed of the lower side a, and upper side f, connected by two ends d, and having the bearings e, above the upper side, in combination with a clamp made from a piece of wire and pivoted in the bearings e of the frame and composed of a lower side h, and an upper side 70, connected by ends i, and having the portions j, between the upper side 70, and ends 11, substantially as specified.
2. In a buckle, the combination with a frame made from a piece of wire and composed of the lower side 0, and upper sidef, connected by the two ends d, and having the hook depending from the lower side and bearings (2, above the upper side; of a clamp made from a single piece of wire and composed of the lower side h, shaped to form a tongue or finger and an upper side 70, connected by ends i, and having the portions 9', journaled in the bearings e, of the frame, substantially as specified. i
In testimony whereof I affix my siguatu re in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM L. 1) ORAN.
