NIPPLE-HOLDER.

Beit known that I, GEORGE F. BARD, a citi- .zen of the United States, residing at Norwich, 1n the county` of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Nipple-Holders, which improvement is fully set forth and descrlbed in the following specification, referof drawings, in which- Figure I isaside View of said nipple holder and Fig. 2 an outer end view of the same. Fig. 3 shows the same principally in central, longitudinal, sectionon line xof Fig.'2. Fig. 4 is a view similar' to that of Fig. 3 illus-V trating particularly the outer (sliding) shell c and Fig. 5 shows inner side and end views of one of the jaws ot' my nipple holder. Fig. 6 is a cross sectional view of the shank of said holder takenon line :1dof Fig. 3. In Fig. 7 I have shown a nipple of the form my device is adapted to hold.

This invention seeks to provide a simple clamping device, of expansible chuck.form, by means of which sections of pipe, or so called nipples, may be securely held during the act of threading the same; my said device being so constructed that previously threaded` p1pe-ends may be clamped without jamming or upsetting such threads.

In producing this holder I have kept in mind three important results to be attained; first, a chuck that will hold the threaded nipple rmlywithout injuring it, second, one that may be quickly and easily operated without recourse to `special wrenches or other tools and, third, one in which different sizes used.

In the accompanying drawings the letter a indicates a shank or mandrel that is squared near 011e end, as at a leavinga head a2 against which the nipple end may abut when the device 1s In service.

The letters b denote jaws whose outer surfaces are tapered from frontl to rear and whose inner surfaces are chambered as at b' to iit the perimeter of the shank a, the portion b3 i-ntervening said chambers being adapted to lit the fiat faces of the square portion ctof said shank, so that when the several jaws are assembled around the shankend they are held against endwise and rotary displacement on said shank. a frustum of a cone upon which is loosely mounted a correspondingly tapered collar c whose rear portion fits loosely on shank ot. Whenever the collar c, is forced outward (that is, toward the holding ends of the jaws) the jaws are forced together after the manner of ordinary drill chucks and to thus move the collar,` as well as to lock the same, I have pro` vided a key d, of wedge shape,that is seated in a slot d in shank a., immediately in the lrearof the collar.

'By placing the larger en'd of the cone outward and locating the sleeve between the wedge and the cone, or to the rear of the cone, the end of the cone never projects' beyond the outer end of the sleeve, which would have a tendency to interfere with the insertion of the nipple between the jaws, as would happen if the smaller end of the cone were outward and the sleevewould have to be slipped outward to loosen the jaws.

When wedge d is driven home in its seat it crowds the vseveral jaws-together, thusiirmly clamping between them a nipple, or other article, placed within said jaws. To release thejaws it is only necessary to drivethe wedge d out of its seat, when collar c slips away from the taper jaws and the latter are at once released. For holding threaded nipple ends the jaws should be correspondingly threaded as shown, so that any tendency of the nipple to turn within the jaws may notA lresult .in jamming the thread.

Different sets ot' jaws, having their open ends bored and tapped to hold nipples of various sizes may be fitted for use with a single shank, collar and key, thus reducing materially the outlay necessary for providing holders for such different sizes.

Having described my invention, I claim- A nipple holder consisting of a shank squared adjacent one end as at a', a set of cone-shaped jaws each being chambered at each end and having an intermediate portion as b5 formed to engage said shank as set forth, a collar mounted to slide on said jaws' and a device substantially as described for moving said collar to close the jaws.
