" UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDDY THOMAS MCKAIG, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DRILL-CHUCK.
SPEQIFICATION f rming part of Letters Patent No. 324,139, dated August-l1, 1885.
Application filed July 6, 1885. (No model.)
Illinois, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Drill Ohucks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same, refer ence being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and. in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical sectional Fig. 2 is a side view of the chuck with portions broken away. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the chuck, and Fig. 4 is a perspective detail view of'one of the sliding jaws.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to chucksfor drills; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of a chuck,
2 in which all the jaws will be guided so as to bear evenly against the shank of the drill, and which shall be simple of construction and du rable, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
5 In the accompanying drawing, the letter A indicates the drill-stock, the outer end of which is formed into anenlarged head, B,havin g an external screw-thread, 0, extending from its inner end to near the outer end. An axial bore, D,
extends into this head from its outer end, and
a number of radiating recesses, E, extend from this axial bore toward the exterior of the head, being inclined toward the rear or inner end of the head. The sides of these recesses 40 are provided with parallel ribs F, preferably one rib at each side, and the drill-clamping jaws G, having grooves H, corresponding to the ribs, slide in these oblique recesses; The inner and outer ends of these jaws are parallel,
and the inner ends of the jaws are beveled at their sides,so as to cause all the inner ends of the jaws to fit together when brought together, while the outer ends of the jaws are provided with outwardly-projecting lugs I, the function of which lugs will be described hereinafter.
J is a sleeve, theinner reduced end of which has an interior screw-thread, K, which fits and turns upon the threaded portion of the head, and the outer end of this reduced portion forms a shoulder, L, facing outward, which bears against the inner faces of the lugs upon the outer ends of the jaws. The outer portion of the sleeve has awider bore and fits with the inner walls of its bore against the outer ends of the aforesaid lugs. A collar, M, fits and turns upon the smooth outer portion of the head, and fits with its inner portion in the outer end of the sleeve, in which it is secured by means of screws N, and its inner edge, 0, forms a shoulder, which bears against the outwardly-facing edges of the lugs upon the outer ends of the jaws, so that it will be seen that by screwing the sleeve in or out upon the threaded portion of the head the shoulders of 'the sleeve and of the collar will draw the jaws by their lugs forward or back in their recesses. The said recesses being inclined to the axis of the head and the ribs being parallel with the sides of the recesses, it will be seen that as the jaws are forced forward in their recesses their inner ends will be forced toward each other, thus clamping the shank of a drill which may be inserted into the axial bore of the head, and when the jaws are forced backward they will be spread, so as to allow the shank to be withdrawn or inserted. The sleeve has preferably one or more perforations, P, in its sides, which may serve as points of attachment for a spanner or similar tool for revolving the sleeve. By removing the screwssecuring the collar within the outer end of the sleeve the collar may be removed and the sleeve screwed far enough back to admit of the jaws being removed.
It will be seen that by having the lugs upon the outer ends of the jaws clampedbetween the shoulders of the sleeve and of the collar the jaws will all be moved forward or back simultaneously, causing them to evenly clamp the drill-shank, and thus hold it perfectly true and centered.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- I. In a drill-chuck, the combination of the formed with an external screw-thread extending to near iisonter end, having its outer end smooth, and having a number of radiating recesses opening from its outer threaded periphery into its axial bore, the said recesses converging toward the outer end of the head, jaws sliding in the said recesses and having outwardly-projeeting lugs upon their outer ends, a sleeve fitting with its reduced inner threaded portion upon the threaded port-ion of the head, and having an outwardly-facing shoulder at the outer end of its threaded portion, and a wider here at its outer end, and a collar fitting and turning upon the smooth portion of the head and secured with its inner end within the outer end of the sleeve, the inner end of the said collar and the shoulder of the sleeve confining the lugs upon thejaws, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. In a drill'chuek, the combination of the drill-stock having a head at its end, screwthreaded at its inner portion and smooth atits outer portion, and having a number of radiupon the head and forming an annular recess confining the lugs upon the jaws, the said sleeve and collar drawing the jaws in or out as it is drawn in or out, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto afiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDDY THOMAS MeKAIG.
