To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, ARTHUR C. VAN HORN and EDWIN E. BARNEY, citizens ofthe United States of America, residing at Groton, inthe county of Tompkins and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drawing-Boards, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Our invention relates to drawing boards and attachments; andv it consists -of ,a circu-l lar board-pivotally connected with a suitable table or stand, and scales and mechanism by which angles and measurements may be easily and accurately made.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure lis a top plan view of our improved board and stand. Fig. 2, is a vertical cross-section of the same; and Fig. 3, is a detail in side ele` vationLshowing the mechanism for connecting the ruling blade with the thread of the leading screw.
Referring to the several parts by reference letters, A, indicates the top of a table orstand, having an annular recess B terminating cen trally inan opening or socket. Into this recess is fitted a circular board B, which is provided with a central bearing or shank g that rests in the socket and forms a pivot upon which the board may be rotated. Upon one edge of the board we form a semi-circular scale, which is divided into two quadrants of ninety degrees each, and in the table we pivot a latch f which is intended to engage the board by means of notches or holes formed upon its under side, soas to hold the board in whatever position it may be turned with reference to the ruling blade. It will thus be seen that lines can be drawn upon the paper P at any desired angle.
The table A is provided with a rectangular frame, or one made to conform to its perimeter. This frame is provided upon one side with arms H H which form bearings for the leading screw D. To this screw is attached the ruling blade E by' means of the bow d and sleeves D D. These sleeves are not threaded but move freely upon the screws as upon a smooth surface. Attached to one of the sleeves is an arm a, to which is pivotally Serial Nth/171,167. (No model the arm extension b between the finger and 6o the thumb. rlhis movement disengages the thread on the arm b from that on the screw D, and the blade E and connections can vbe 'moved rapidly from side to side of the board B. When however it is desired to move the y blade a short distance or to adjust it very `accurately to the scale C', the hand wheel F is employed and the blade is advanced by the turning of the screw.
The wheel F is formed with a cylindrical portion h upon which we mark divisions corresponding to those on the scale C. This circular scale isemployed when we determine the point to which the blade is to be moved bythe eye of the operator. This gives greater accuracy than can be had .by looking at the ruling blade and C.
Upon the shank of the screw D, we place a small wheel e, the periphery of which is divided into a series of faces upon which rests a spring f. This enables the operator to determine by'counting, the extent to which the scale has been-advanced, and also serves to retain the screw in the position in which it is left.
The several vscales may be divided in any proportion of measurement that may be found the most convenient. 1
From the above description it is believed that any one skilled in the art can make and use our improved drawing board which we have endeavored to describe accurately and to claim specifically, but if by inadvertence, accident or mistake we have omitted to claim any part, parts or combinations, which we might rightfully have claimed, we wish it understood that such omission or omissions are yunintentional and nothing we have herein disclosed and that we could lawfully claimis abandoned to the public.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as` new, and desire to secure by Letters Paten t, is-
1. A table or stand provided with a normally xed scale upon its side, a board pivotally mounted upon the said stand, a ruling blade and positive means of attachment between the said stand and ruling blade for positioning said blade with reference to the scale, in the manner described and for the purpose specied.
2. A stand or table having an openingin its face, a circular board pivoted in said opening, one side of said board marking the de grees in a half circle, in combination with a fixed scale and a ruling blade secured to said stand at right angles thereto, and positive means of attachment between the said blade and stand to move the blade and position it at different points in relation to the said scale on the stand and board, in the manner described and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination of the table having the xed scale C, and the leading screw provided with the hand Wheel and indexed portion h, with the ruling blade and means for engaging the blade With the thread of the screw, and to disengage it therefrom at will, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination of the leading screw'r D, the wheel e, and spring f with the Wheel F, blade E and connections, substantially as set forth.
