E. A. BECK.' 30X FASTBNBR.
Patented'Oct. 9, 1894.

PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN A. BECK, OF FORT WORTH, TEXAS.
Box-FAsTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 527,043,
dateaoctober 9,1894.
Application iled anuary 31, 1894, Serial No. 498,621. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.:l
Be it known that I, EDWIN A. BECK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Worth, in the county of Tarrant and State of Texas, have invented a new .and useful Oase or Box Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in case or box fasteners.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of the fastening devices of cases and boxes, and to provide one, which will be especially adapted for cases and boxes containing bottled beverages, and in which the cover may be readily removed from a box or case and transferred to another, lor hung at one side of the box or case when not in use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a fastening device which will enable a cover to be secured to the ordinary box or case for containing bottles Without altering the construction of the same.V
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box or case provided with a fastening device, constructed in accordance with this invention, the cover being in place. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View of the saine. Fig. 3 is a similar view, the cover being elevated at an angle to the box or case and be` ing moved longitudinally of the securing rod to free the angularly bentend thereof preparatory tothe removal of the cover. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view, the cover being hung at one side of the box or case.
Like numerals of reference indicate correspending parts in all the Iigures of the drawings.
1 designates a box or case having an interior tray 2 for holding bottled beverages, such as soda water, ginger ale, beer, and the like, and provid ed at each end with the usual opening 3 for forming a hand hold,to enable the box or case to be readily carried. The box or case is provided with a rectangular cover 4, adapted to fit within the upper edges of it, and it has secured to the cover by means of cleats 5, a longitudinally disposed securingrod 6 extended beyond the ends of the cover and resting in recesses or grooves 7 of the ends of the box or case to permit the cover to drop slightly within the case. One end of the securing rod is provided with a downward extending `hasp arm.8, which is provided with an opening adapted to receive a perforated projection 9, a staple, or the like,
whereby the hasp arm may be secured to the box or case by means of avvire or similar key or a lock, or the like. The other end of the securing rod is angularly bent and returned 0n itself to form an open loop 10, and is provided with a depending extension 11 thereby formingadouble hook. The loop is adapted to receive that portion of the adjacent end of the box between the groove or recess 7 and the opening 3; and the extension 11 depends below the bottom of the opening 3, when the securing rod is in a horizontal position and the cover is in place, to prevent this end of the rod from being sprung out of engagement with the box or case. The opposite end of the cover 4 is provided with a slot 12 to receive the hasp arm to permit the cover to move longitudinally of the securing rod, as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the accompanying drawings, to free the angularly bent end of the rod, to enable the same to be readily disengaged from the opening 3. The cover may then be removed and hung by means of a hook 13 to one side of the box or case; and the securing rod may be turned in the openings or bends of the cleats which form guides, in order to present noproj ections. The hook is arranged between two rows of bottle openings, to prevent it from coming in contact with the contents kofthe box or case. Any construction of cleats may be employed for securing the rod to the cover.
It will be seen that the fastening device is simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction, that the drop cover is readily detachable and transferable, and that the ordinary construction of soda or beerl box is not materially changed.
Changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
What I claim is- 1. As a fastening for box covers, the combination with a cover provided on its upper face with guides, of a securing rod slidingly arranged in the guides and located on the upper face of the cover, the ends of the rod projecting beyond the same and provided at one end with a hasp, and having at its other end a hook adapted to removably engage and interlock with an opening of a box or case, to which the cover is applied, substantially as described. Y
2. The combination of a box or case provided at its ends with openings, a cover, a rod arranged longitudinally of the cover and slidingly mounted on the upper face of the same and provided at one end of the box or case with a depending hasp arm and having its other end bent inward and forming an inward extending open loop and having a depending extension and hooked exteriorly into the adjacent opening said extension projecting below the opening and engaging the inner face of the, box or case, substantially as described.
3. The combination of a box or case provided at its ends with openings, a cover iitting Within the upper edges of the box or case and provided at one end with a longitudinal slot, and a longitudinally disposed securing rod attached to the upper face of the cover and provided at one end with a depending hasp arm arranged adjacent to and adapted to be received in said slot and arranged adjacent to thesameuto'permit the cover to be moved 1ongitudinally, said rod having at its other end a hook engaging the adjacent opening, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed mysignature in the presence of two Witnesses.
EDWIN A. BECK.
