B.'P. NICHOLAS.
GLoTHBs DRIBR.'
Patented Oct.. 2, 1894.
au eo NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN F. NICHOLAS, OF RENOVO, PENNSYLVANIA.
CLOTH ES-DRIER.
SPEGIFICATONforming part of Letters Patent No. 527,003, dated October 2, 1894. Application filed March 17, 1894. Serial No. 504,028. (No model.)
To all whom it may con/cern:
Beit known that I, BENJAMIN F. NICHOLAS, a citizen of the United States,.residing at Renovo, in the county of Clinton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Driers; and I do hereby declare lthe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates, generally, to clothes driers, and particularly to that class ot' driers which are used within doors, and it has for its object to provide a simple, durable, comparatively inexpensive device adapted to hold a large number of pieces of clothing thereon and which will be easily and readily taken apart and may be compactly stowed away, and it consists in the parts and comblnations of parts hereinafterfully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective View of my improved' clothes drier set up and in position to receive the clothes; Fig. 2, a detail view in vertical section showlng my improved means for supporting the device from the wall of the room, and Fig. 3, a perspective view of the castings forming the support for the clothes drier.
Similar letters referto similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings A, represents the wall of a room or other support to which my improved clothes drier is removably and adj ustably attached by means of the wall plate or bracket B, screw eye C, hanger rod D, and end plate E. The wall plate or bracket B, is secured to the wall of the room or other support A, by any suitable means, such as screws a, as shown and at a suitable distance above said bracket B, the screw eye C, is driven into the wall or other support in the same vertical plane with the plate or bracket B, a plate b, being interposed between said screw eye and the wall or support to prevent possible injury or damage to the latter by the end of the hanger rod D.. The wall plate or bracket B, is cast or formed with a laterally projecting lug c, the outer end of which is rounded off, as at d, and through which lug a perforation or opening e, is formed, said perforation being formed round or circular, as at f, for about two thirds of i-ts length from its lower end, and the upper end or mouth of said perforation being formed square, as at g, and of greater width or diameter than the round portion to which it tapers or inclines, as at h, from all sides.V
F, represents a bar, preferably of wood, having a series 'of perforations t', formed transversely therethrough adapted to snugly, but readily, receive the series of rods j, which is preferably made of metal. side of the inner end of the bar F, the end plate E, best shown in Fig. 3, is firmly secured by means of bolts or rivets 7c, passing through said bar and plate or by any other suitable or desired means. The end plate E, is cast or formed with a downwardly extending plate G, which projects from about the centeryof the lower side of plate E, and is preferably formed with rounded corners as is also the main plate E. The plate E, is secured at the end of the bar F, so that about one-half thereof extends or projects beyond the end of said bar and on-this end or portion l, at its lower side is cast or formed the trunnion m, the upper portion of which is formed square, as at fn, and tapers from all sides downwardly to where it joins the remaining portion of said trunnion which is round as best shown in Fig. 2, thus adapting said trunnion to fit within the perforation or opening @,'of the lug c of the wall plate or bracketl B, into which it is inserted when the parts are in their operative position. A perforation is formed in thelower end of the trunnion which projects beyond the lug to receive a key, o, to prevent its withdrawal from the opening,
At the lower said perforation being formed in said trunnion at a point at such distance from the lower side of lug c, as to permit of the trunnion being lifted or raised a sufficient distance in the opening e, as to cause its squared portion, n, to clear the squared portion g, of the perforation or opening e, and thus permit of the trunnion being turned in the opening e.
A screw eye p, is secured to the upper side of the bar F,l into which one of the 'hooked ends of hanger rod D, is caught the other hooked end of said rod being caught in the IOO screwweye C, attached to the or `other support A, thus assisting the plate E, to support the bar F, and its rod j, on which the clothes are hung, in a horizontal position, as
Along the lower sidesof the bar F, a series of metal loops s, is attached which is intended to receive the rods j, when not in use, the downwardly extending plate G forming a bottom or stop at the inner end of the bar F, for the ends of said rods j, to bear against when inserted in said loops.
As Will be understood from the above description the rods j, when not in use may be compactly stowed away by simply withdrawing them from `the bar andplacing them in t the loops s, endwise `and then, by slightly raising the innerV end of theubarvF, so as to lift the squared portion ofA the trunnion ,out of the opening e, in the lug c, the bar maybe swung against the wall A, and the "trunnionn permitted to drop back Ain opening `e, thus lockingit in position against the Wall; also it will be observedthat the device is readily detachable from its supportbyr merely removing the key from the` trunnion and the hanger rod from the screw eyes.`
Having thus described my lnvention, vvhat claim as new, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is l. In a clothes drier, the combination, with a horizontal bar and a series of removable rods secured to and extending at right angles 'i from said bar,of an end plate having a downwardly extending trunnion formed with a round portion and a tapering, angular portion, and a` Wall plate having a laterally projecting lug formed with an opening having b antapering, Aangular portion and a cylindrical portion corresponding in shape to the shape of said trunnion, whereby said bar may be locked at right angles to and also parallel
