ERASTUS TRACY, OF POUGHKEEPSIE, NEW YORK.
MACHINE FOR CLEANING BURS FROM WOOL ON THE- SKIN'.
Specicaton of Letters Patent No. 526, dated December 20, 1837.
T0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EnAsTUs TRACY, o-f Poughkeepsie, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented a new and useful machine for the purpose of cleaning the burs from the wool on the sheepskins, as imported from South America and other places; and I do hereby declare that the following` is a full and exact description thereof.
I construct a frame, such as is represented at A, A, in the drawing, upon which I mount a cylinder B, which may be two feet long, and one foot in diameter, or of such other dimensions as may be preferred. Upon this cylinder, I place four, or any other convenient number, rows of teeth, which should be made of steel; These teeth should be about an inch long, and stand about an eighth of an inch apart. They may be cut upon plates of steel, or they may be set separately into the cylinder. This cylinder is to be made to revolve with a rapid motion, toward the endless apron C, upon which the skin to be operated upon is to be laid.
The two rollers around and with which this endless apron revolves are placed in a separate frame D, which is made to slidel back and forth upon the frame A, by means of the rack and pinion A, A. The endless apron is made to revolve by hand, by means of the winch E, attached to the front roller. Immediately above this latter roller` thereL is a pressing roller F, which is to be borne down by means of weights or springs; and between this and the endless apron the skins to be operated upon are held.
In using this machine, the frame D, is to be moved back from the cylinder B, the skin to be cleaned is then placed upon the endless apron, and the winch E, turned so as to pass it about half way through between the roller F, and the apron, the frame D, is then moved toward the revolving cylinder, so that its teeth shall take into the wool, the winch is then turned so as to withdraw the skin, the other half of which is then subjected to the same operation with the first, and it will be found to be perfectly cleaned, without loss of, or injury t0 the wool.
f I claim as my invention, and ask a Patent The above described machine for cleaning wool on the skin from burs; that is to saya machine having a revolving cylinder furnished with teeth, to which the skin, placed upon an endless apron, is tobe fed up, and operated upon, as herein set forth.
