Be i1: known hat I, ALEXANDER I-I. SIEFL, a eitizen of the United States, residing at Brookville, in the county of JeEer-Son and State of Pennsylvania, have invented oertain new and nseful Improvements in Penholders, of wbieh the following is a speeioation.
Aooording to myinvention, I provide a pen bolder wbiob has a pen carrier secured to it by improved devioes, by means of wbiob the pen may be olamped in any desired position to bold it at any desired angle or inolination with referenoe to the eenter-line or axis of the body of the bolder. The pen carrier is in the form of a ball to whiob the pen is attaohed, andtbe end of the bolder proper is provided with a seat or sooket against wbiob one end of the ballreszs, a fianged collar bearing against the opposite end of the ball. A nut seoured to the collar engages with the end of the bolder, and adjusts the oollar to the proper position and holds it seourely. Projeotions on the oollar engaging with the stationary part of the bolder prevent it from iurning wbilebeing adjusted,- and the oollar is so conneoted with the nut tbat, wbile the nut is free to turn with referenee to the 001 lar, t is attaohed theret0 in snob inanner that it will not acoidentally separate from it. Instead of attaohing the pen directly 1:0 the ball, I may mount it in a sooket formed in an arm projeoting laterally from the ball, by whieb arrangement the pen may have a wider range of adjustment. The arrangenients above described are those preferred, but; my invention is not limited to these details of oonstrnetion, as it involves isolated featnres wbioh are hereinafter more fully described.
The subject-matter deemed novel and as within the scope of my invention is pointed out in the claims.

Referring first to Figs. 1 to 5, A indicates the body of the pen bolder. Preferably, but not necessarily, it; is provided on one end with a ferrule B, whiob may be made of sheet metal, and whiob projeets beyond the end of the body A, to form a sooket or reoess b. I-

T he arrangement is snob that the nut E aan turn relatively to the oollar D, and, by means of the serew-tbreads, moved longitudinally with referenee to the ferrule B.
Wben the ball or pen carrier C, is in the position indioated in Fig. 2, it may be firmly olamped and seourely held by the deviees above desoribed. Wben the nut, is 100sened, the carrier may be adjusted in anydirection, to any desired inolination, and, wben tbus adjusted, by turning the nut; E, it may be seeurely olamped in that position.
It will be observed tbat, wben tightening the nut, the collar will move longitudinally toward the ferrule, and will not moveaxially with referenoe thereto. This is an important feature of my improvements beoause, if ei ther or both of the olamping members moved with referenoe to the ball or carrier after it was set, it would tend to move it out of plaoe, but the arrangement is snob that not only is the nnt free to move axiallywith referenoe to the oollar, bnt the collar is held positively against an axial movement by means of the fingers al, before referred to.
The olamping devioes andthe pen carrier may be modified without departing from my 1nvention.
In Fig. 6, the body of the bolder A,is shown as provided with a ferrule B, sorew-threaded at its onter' end to receive the screw-th readed end e, of the nnt E, Whioh, in this instanoe, 1s formed with a olosed cap e spun on 01 otherwise seoured to the serew-tbreaded' part e, whioh is formed with a fiange e, 150 engage the groove or reoess 01 in the bolder D. The form of the oollar, in this instanoe, is somewhat modified. Its rear end is flanged at d to form a hearing for the ball or carrier 0, and it is provided with a lng d whioh enters a sooket b, in the 'errule B. This construction, while permitting the collar to move lon- .gitndinally with referenoe to the body of the holder, retains it against a tnrning or axial movement. In this instanoe, the rear bearing or olamping member of the carrier is preferably in the form of a flanged ring F, seonred in proper position in the ferrule B.
The ball C, is provided with alaterally projeoting arm G, having on its onter end a Soeket-pieoe or head g,to receive the pen H. This sooket-pieoe is suitably shaped to accommodae the pen, whioh may be inserted in either en Preferably all parts of the olampng devioes exoept the ball or carrier C, are made of sheet metal.
The slot 12 is preferably enlarged at its inner end 12 to permit of a wider range of adjustment of the arm F.
In Fig. 11 a modification is shown in whioh the arm F projeots forwardly from the bal], the socket g being in the end thereof, instead of arranged transverselywith referenoe thereto.
In Fig. 12 snbstantally the same form of carrier is shown as that indioated in Figs 6 and 10.
By seonring the pen direotly to the ball or carrier C, as indioated in Fig. 2, the center of movement is brought nearer to the point of the pen than it wonld be if the pen were mounted in an arm projeoting from the ball and thus I secure a oonstruotion whioh is firm and steady, with small leverage and little liability to slip.
In the oonstruotion shown in Fig. 6, while the pen is carried by an arm projeoting laterally from the ball, my improved olampi ng devioes are snoh that there is little liabil1ty of slipping, and the pen has a wider range of adj ustment to aooommodate different styles of writing and the various fanoies of the Writer.
I claim as 1ny invention- 1. The combination, of the body of the bolder, the pen carrier al; one end of the holder,a nnt engaging the body of the bolder, and a oollar oonneoted with the nut and bearing against the pen carrier but held aga1nst axial movement when the nut is turned, substantially as set forth.
2. The oombination, with the body of the holder, of a sorew-threaded ferrule mounted on one end thereof, a nnt engaging the ferrule, a collar attaohed to the nut, and a pen carrier arranged between the ferrule and the eollar, snbstantially as set forth.
3. The oombination, with the body of the holder, of a nut adj nstable longitudnally thereon, a pen carrier arranged in a seat or.
sooket at the end of the body of the bolder, and a oollar attaohed to the nnt and havng a seat for the carrier, snbstantally as set forth.
4. The combination, with the body of the holder, of the oollar provided with devices, snob as the fingers d, entering slots in the end of the body to prevent it from turning, a pen carrier held between the oollar and the end of the body, and a nut engaging the body and the collar to move the oollar toward the body, substantially as set forth.
5. The oombination of the body of the bolder, a ferrule seoured to the end thereof, a spherical carrier C having a laterally projeoting arm extending through an opening in the side of the ferrnle, and provided with a sooket pieoe for the pen arranged transversely with referenoe to the laterally projeoting arm, and olampingdevioes tor holding the carrier in any desired position, substantially as set forth.
6. The oombination, with the slotted ferrnle provided with a olamping member for one end of the carrier, of a oollar oonstitnting the other olamping .member, and a nut engaging the oollar and the ferrule to tighten the collar on the carrier, snbstantially as set forth.
7. The ball or carrier C, provided with a laterally projecting arm having a head g, provided with pen sookets on opposite sides, in oombinaton with the body of the pen holder and olamping devioes for seonring it thereto, snbstantially as set forth.
