" S. BHOLMES.
KNITTED DOLL.
Patented Sept. 18, 1894.
PETERS CCL morouwm wAsmN UNITED STATES vPATENT OFFICE.
SARAH E. HOLMES, OF NEEDHAM, MASSACHUSETTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 526,319, dated September 18, 1894. Application filed July 2, 1894. Serial No. 516,344. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom t may concern.:
Be it known that I, SARAH E. HOLMES, of Needham, county of Norfolk, State of Massa`- chusetts, have invented an Improvement in Initted Dolls, of which the following description, .in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on th drawings representing like parts.
This invention has forits object the production of a novel knitted doll made in a'novel manner.
, My improved doll has a head, body, legs and feet knitted as one piece in tubular form, and
the arms are made as tu bes and stitched to the body. I have also provided the doll with a knitted hood.
`Figure l shows the knitted covering for the doll with the exception ot' one leg, one arm, and foot as it will appear before being stuffed or made up. Fig. 2 shows the doll made up, and Fig. 3 shows a modified construction of covering.
In the production ot' my improved doll I commence knitting on the line a-a, and I knit a tube down to the line b-b, where I contract the tube, preferably by shortening the stitch, `and I then continue the tube long enough for the neck c, and I then widen the tube at d to form the shoulders, and thereafter continue the tube from CZ to e, to form the body. At the lower end of the body I take a transferring comb f and pick off from the needles about one-half the loops, as shown in Fig. 1, and then I continue the knitting -from e down to g as a smaller tube, narrowing somewhat to form a leg. At the point g, I run the loops oft of about half the needles then in use, leaving a line of loops at r, and then l knit on the remaining needles a portion r to form a heel, and then set up the loops r and knit in usual manner the top of the foot and sole thereof, and unite all to form a square heel, but I may knit the foot in any way that stocking feet are now commonly knitted. One leg and foot having been finished, the stitches are run off the needles, and the stitches held by the combs fare put back onto the needles, and a second leg and foot are knitted as a continuation of the body. The arms h, knitted as tubes, are stitched at one end to the edges of the tube forming the body, the other ends of the arm tubes being drawn together after having been stuffed. The fabric having been knitted from the point a to the feet as a tube, is stuffed, and the tube is stitched across in the line ma leaving a part Vstitch it about the top of the head, as at p, at-
the junction of the top of the head with the hood.
The tubular seamless knitted fabricfor the outer covering or body of the doll may be composed of yarns of any desired material, or color, and the tube may be of any desired diameter, the completed doll being indestructible by blows.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a knitted body from which the hood forming portion has been omitted, but the doll produced from such piece may have a hood or head covering ot another piece attached to it.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I 1. A doll the outer covering of which-consists of a seamless tube bifurcated for legs, and having feet knitted thereto, and arm tubes stitched to the tubular body, the tube being contracted to form a neck, and widened to form the shoulder, and being of a length above the neck to be closed at top and-form a head, and having suitable material secured to the head for hair, substantially asdescribed.
2. The herein described doll consisting of an outer covering composed of a seamless tube bifurcated to forni legs and having feet knitted thereto, and arm tubes united to the tubular body, the tube for the body being contracted to form the neck and widened to form the shoulders, and being of alengtli ido above the neck-suitable to be closed at top and form a head, and having an attached hood, substantially as described.
3. A doll the outer covering of which consists of a seamless tube bifurcated for legs, and having feet knitted thereto, and. arm tubes stitched to the tubular body, the tube being contracted to form the neck, and Widened to form the shoulder, and being of a length above the neck to be closed at top and form a head, and having an attached hood and suitable material for hair attached between the junction of the top of the head and the hood, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof l have signed my r 5 naine to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
SARAH E. HOLMES.
