UNITED STATES FRANK J. SHEPHERD AND MERRITT B. FLAGG, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
PATENT OFFICE.
SALES-SLIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 526,002, dated September 1], 1894.
Application tiled March '7, 1894. Serial No. 502,774. (No specimens.)
To alwhom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANK J. SHEPHERD and MERRITT B. FLAGG, citizens of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sales-Slips; and we do hereby declare the' following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable 0thers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention has relation to sales slips or books and among the objects in View is to provide a sales slip or book by means of which duplicate entries of all sales or orders may be obtained simultaneously without loss of time and without any annoyance in the handling.
A further object. is to provide a sales-slip or book by which all orders as entered may be allowed to remain intact in the book without interfering with subsequent entries, thus not being liable to becom'e lost as is the case with slip books wherein each entry is taken out after being entered.
A further object is to provide a sales slip or book wherein the orders will be hidden from view beneath the usual carbon sheet ernployed which is very desirable and not to be attained by sales slips as now constructed.
A further object of the invention is to provide a sales slip or book wherein the orders may be entered beginning at the bottom of the book, the subsequent orders being entered above the previous ones which is contrary to the method of making entries in the slips of usual construction, wherein the orders are entered beginning at the top and entered successively downward.
With the above-recited and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction7 arrangement and combination of parts as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in lthe drawings, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawingsz-Figure l is a side view leaves A are intended to receive the original entry of each sale or order, while the sheets or leaves B are intended to contain a duplicate of each such entry by means of a carbon sheet interposed between a sheet A and a sheet B, it will be understood that the number and size of the sheets A should correspond with the number and size of the sheets B.
In. securing the sheets A, and B together to form the slip book we arrange `them so as to alternate with each other as shown, each sheet A therefore having its corresponding sheet B, lying directly beneath it to receive the duplicate of the entry made on sheet A. For securing the sheets A, B, together any suitable means may be employed, though we would preferably wire-stitch or rivet them together as seen at C, at or about at the center of the leaves.
Upon the opposite sides and opposite ends of each sheet A we provide any suitable inscription as for instance the merchants name and address, and lines for the date and name and address of the purchaser, so that when the book is folded in the center all the printed matter on the sheets A faces upwardly. The described printed matter is arranged toward the upper end of the page and below such matter the leaves may be ruled to receive the description and quantity of the goods ordered and the price thereof. The leaves B may or may not be provided with any inscriptions or other matter as desired. We also perforate the leaves A and B, at each side of the center thereof as seen at- D, to facilitate the tearing off of the leaves when this may be desired.
For the purpose of obtaining a duplicate of each entry made upon a sheet A, we provide a carbon sheet E which may be suitably secured at one edge to the lower section of the cover F, and when an entry is to be made on a sheet A, the book or slip is opened and the carbon sheet E laid upon the lowermost sheet B, after which its corresponding sheet A is laid down upon the carbon sheet and the entry then written upon said sheet A. When such entry has been made and it is desired to make an ent-ry of another order, the carbon sheet is taken from between the lowermost sheets A, B, and laid upon the next lowermost sheet B, and its corresponding sheet A then laid upon the carbon sheet after which IOO the entry is made, as before, and this is continued for each and every succeeding entry until all the leaves are used.
It will be seen that in our device the entries are made from the bottom upwardly, each entry being unexposed to view by means of the carbon sheet laid thereupon, and that none of the entries need be torn from the book when entered, but may be allowed to remain therein until such time as maybe desired, without interfering with the entering ot any subsequent orders. We preferably provide the slips with a suitable folding cover rF to which the slip may be detachably secured by any suitable means, as for instance by means of a clasp H constructed as described and shown in our pending application for patent filed on the 7th day of March, 1894, Serial No. 502,773.
The advantages to be derived from the use of our improved sales slip or book will be readily seen and appreciated and particularly by those having use for such in their business.
What we claim is- The herein described sales-sli p or book consisting of a series ot` leaves or sheets A and B adapted to be folded at their longitudinal center to equally divide said sheets, said sheets having their opposite ends free or unsecured, and said leaves B being adapted to receive the duplicate entries, in combination with a cover to which said sheets are detachably secured at their longitudinal center, and a carbon sheet secured at one of its ends to a section of the cover and extending toward the center of the leaves, said carbon sheet being secured at a point adjacent to the free ends of the leaves and being adapted to be laid upon the sheets B when the sheetsA are detached or are thrown back and said carbon sheet serving to rest upon and cover the leaves B containing previous orders, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof We affix our si gnat ures in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK J. SHEPHERD. MERRIT'P B. FLAGG.
