URINAL.
No 525,925. Patented Sept. 11, 1894.
witnesse s a ad *UNITED STATEs PATENT OFFICE.
UGUST SAHLSTROM, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
URIINAL.
' SPECIFIOATIOH forming part of Letters Patent No. 525,925, dated September 11, 1894.
Application filed August 12, 1893. Serial No. 433,013. (No model.) A
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST SAHLSTROM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Urinals, Portable with the Person; and I do hereby declare .the following to be a full, clear, and'exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the samo.
My invention has for it's object to provide a concealed urinal, portable with the person and capable of use without attracting attention. It is Well known, that many men are afflicted With gravel, kidney trouble, or other forms of disease which require the frequent discharge of the urine. Many of these same classes of men are obliged to work in public and exposed places. My device is designed for these classes of 'persons, with a view of enabling them to find relief without exposure or notice.
To this end, my invention consists of the device hereinafterfully described and defined in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device detached Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same as carried inside the trousers When not in position for use; and Fig. 3 is a similar view, showing the tube lowered and ready for use.
A represente a pair of trousers provided with a waist-band button a.
B represente 'the urinal tube, which 'is open at both ends, as shown, and is provided with a pair of suspendin g devices b b', attached one above and the other below the mouth of the tubef The tube is flexible and is composed of some waterproof material, preferably rubber cloth. The tube B, taken together with the upper strap or suspending device,
y b, is of sufficient length to project, at its lower end, below the trousers, When lowered into position for use, as shown, in Fig. 3. When not in use, the Weight of the tube is taken on the lower strap or suspending device, b', as shown in Fig. 2; and, on account ofsaid strap being attached to the tube at a point below its muth, a fold b will be formed which will serve to close the upper end of the tube and prevent any offensive fumes arising therefrom at that point. The normal position of the tube is as shown in Fig. 2, with both straps or suspending devices b b', attached to the trousers button, a, or other point of support. In this position, the tube will be entirely concealed from view and will not be any serious inconvenience to the wearer. When desired for use, all the man has todo is to release the lower strap b', When the tube will drop into the position shown in Fig. 3, with the upper end accessible and the lower end protruding below the trousers. It is obvious, that the tube may be thus lowered and the urine be voided by workmen and others, in public places, probability of attracting attention.
While espeoially designed for workmen, as hitherto noted; it is obvious that my device is of equal service to all classes of men *under like conditions. It is of especial service, for eX- ample, to pedestrians, men rowing boats, &c.
What I claim, and desire to Secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is as follows:
1. A concealed urinal, portable with the person, consisting of a flexible tube depending inside the trousers and provided with a pair of suspending devices attached one above the other, the one below the mouth of the tube for forming a fold to close the tube at its upper end and raising the tube at its lower end When suspended thereby, substantially as described.
2. The concealed urinal, portable with the person, consisting of the flexible tube B, cornposed of water-proof material, open at its upper and lower ends, and provided with a:
applied one pair off suspending'straps, b b', above and the other below the mouth of the tube, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. r
AUGUST SAHLSTROM.
