(No Model.)
D. B. MARTIN. STOPPER FOR HOT WATER BAGS.
Patented Sept. 11, 1894.
NITED STATES DENNIS B. MARTIN, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE SEAMLESS RUBBER COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
STOPPER FOR HOT-WATER BAGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 525,853, dated September 11, 1894.
Application filed June 11, 1894- Serial No. 514,229. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DENNIS B. MARTIN, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Stoppers for Hot Water Bags; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawingsconstitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, a view in side elevation of a screwstopper constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a View thereof in vertical central section; Fig. 3, a detached view of the washer; Fig. 4, a view thereof in transverse section.
My invention relates to an improvement in that class of screw-stoppers for water-bags whlch comprise a sheet-metal body, a wire, handle, and a rubber packing or washer, the ob ect of my invention being to produce at a comparatively low cost for manufacture, a simple and strong stopper, of superior appearance and effectiveness.
With these ends in view, my invention consists in a screw-stopper having a spun body, which is recessed to receive an annular packlng-washer and in certain details of construction and combinations of parts as will be her i ft r d scribed, and pointed out in the claim.
As herein shown, the stopper consists of a sheet-metal spun body A, a disk-shaped sheetmetal cap B applied to the open outer end thereof, a wire handle 0 secured to the center of the said cap, and an annular packing washer D, preferably formed of soft rubber, and located in an annular recess A, formed in the body just within, and located in the plane of, the closed inner end thereof. The
body is also formed with screw-threads A adapting it to be screwed into a suitable screw-threaded socket or collar E, which is mounted in the mouth of the water-bag in any approved manner, and constructed at its inner end with an inwardly projecting annular flange E, against which the packingwasher D is impinged when the stopper is screwed home in the collar. It will be understood, of course, that both the annular recess A and the screw-threads A are spun into the body during its formation, and before its assemblance with the cap B, the edge of which is clasped over the outwardly turned upper edge of the body, in the usual manner. The annular recess extends inward sufficiently below the bottoms of the screw-threads so that when the washer is in place, its outer edge will be flush, or substantially flush, with the surface of the body.
By adapting the body of the stopper to itself receive the packing-washer in a recess formed in it, I secure a construction which is at once extremely simple, cheap, attractive, convenient and cleanly. The washer may be readily removed and replaced when worn, or for the purpose of washing it and the stopper. Furthermore, when the stopper is screwed home in its socket or collar, the washer is subjected not merely to direct flatwise compression, but also to pressure tending to force it outward and expand it into the bottom of the socket, whereby its effectiveness as a packing is greatly enhanced, the washer being forced outward by the inclination of the inner or outer wall of the recess in which it is located.
I would have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction herein shown and described, but hold myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations therein as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
1 am aware, however, that a bottle-stopper, constructed with an annular recess to receive a packing-washer, is old. I am also aware that a hollow stopper for hot-water bags, formed in part of spun sheet-metal, is old. I do not, therefore, claim either of those constructions broadly.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A'screw-stopper for Water-bags, consisting of a spun sheet-metal body having its inner endclosed, and its outer end open, and formed with screw threads, and with an annular re- In testimony whereof I have signed this cess; located between its screw-threads and specification in the presence of two subscribits closed inner end a sheet-metal cap applied ing witnesses.
to the open outer end of the said body, a han- DENNIS B. MARTIN. dle secured to the said cap, and an annular Witnesses:
packing-washer located in the said recess of FRED G. EARLE,
the body, substantially as described. GEO. D. SEYMOUR.
