E.-NOLON. 4 BACKING BOX.
PatentedAug. 28,1894.
INITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWAED NQLON, OF WAUSAU, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR, BY .MESNE ASSIGN- MENTS, TO EUGENE E. PRUSSING, OF HIGHLAND PARK, ILLINOIS.
PACKING-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 525,276 dated August 28, 1894.
Application filed June 9, 1894. Serial No. 514,009. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD NoLoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wausau, in the county of Marathon and State of Wisconsin, have invented a certain new anduseful Improvement in Packing-Boxes, (Case No. 1,) of which the following is a fulLclear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to packing boxes adapted to be used for general purposes.
Heretofore it has been proposed to construct packing boxes by forming the sides of thin strips of basket Work supported by frames at the angles. Such boxes, while thus made light, have not been found to possess the requisite strength and durability, and, when exposed, rain and dust penetrated through the cracks existing in the basket work; moreover it has been found impracticable to make the joints Water and dust proof.
By the use of my invention I am enabled to produce a box that is at once Waterproof and dust and moisture proof, and which may be built at the factory and shipped in aknockdown form, ready to be set 'up and nailed together by the user.
My packing box consists of sheets of wood pulp forming the sides thereof, each sheet being permanently secured to a wooden frame. In this manner the six sides thereof may be of a uniform construction; that is, each consists of a single sheet of wood pulp and a wooden frame on which the sheet is mounted and secured at the edges thereof.
The wood pulp which I employ should be strong, waterproof and dust proof, and when the faces of the box are secured together the sheets of wood pulp are compressed between the frames and come in contact with each other at the edges so that the wood fiber is brought closely into contact with the surfaces of the frame pieces and all the joints rendered water and air tight, so that the wooden frame pieces form no part of the interior surface of ghe box but serve primarily as stifiening memers.
Referring to the drawing, the wooden frame pieces a. a are dovetailed together at their angles. Upon these frames aa are permanently secured the wood pulp sheets b I); thus each face of the box consists of a singlelight, thin sheet of wood pulp mounted upon a wooden frame, to which the sheet at its edges is securely attached. All the edges and angles are made true, even and uniform. When the frames are secured together the edges of the Wood pulp sheets will be compressed, as shown in the drawing, between the frame pieces, and all the joints rendered secure.
The pulp may be colored as desired to distinguish boxes employed in difierent lines of trade or by different firms. Provision may also be made for ventilation, when desired, for example in the cover, as indicated in the drawing.
My box, as thus constructed, has been found of special utility where light, cheap, strong and tight boxes are required. In thematter of Weight alone there is asaving of more than fifty per cent. as compared with ordinary wooden boxes adapted to serve the same purpose.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an article of new manufacture, a packing box consisting of the combination with single sheets of wood pulp, of frames, one frame for each sheet upon which the sheet is mounted, said frames being secured together to compress the edges of the wood pulp between the frames, whereby a box is formed of uniformly constructed sides, the interior surface of the box being entirely of wood pulp having tight joints, substantially as shown and described.
In witness whereof I hereunto subscribe my name this 6th day of June,A. D. 1894.
EDWARD NOLON.
