J. R. GROG-AN AN DIRON.
No. 525,204. Patented Aug. 28, 1 94'.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. i
JOHN RICHARD e oeAN, OF QUITMAN, TEXAS.
ANDIRON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 525,204, dated August 28, 1894.
Application filed March 27,1894.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN RICHARD GRoo- N, a citizen of the United States of America, residingat Quitman, in the county of Wood and State'of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Andirons, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention contemplates certain new and useful improvements in andirons or firedogs and has for its object the production of a simple and inexpensive device of this nature capable of being easily handled and which will retain the burning logs in place. A
The invention consists of an andiron having two dogs or members connected together and afender removably connected to the front of said dogs and extending over the intervening space or opening.
The invention also comprises the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawingsz-Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my improved andiron. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the fender removed. Fig. 3 is a view of the latter.
Referring to the drawings, A designates my improved andiron which comprises two rightangular dogs a connected together by an arched bar B, the vertical members I) of which have lower right-angular ends I) forming supporting feet. The forward ends of the horizontal portions of said dogs are connected to said vertical members I) at about the center thereof, and from the front of said members I) extend right-angular holding plates 0 between which and the bar B are spaces or openings terminating in shoulders d.
D is a fender designed to be extended over the space between the two dogs and serves to prevent the burning logs from falling from or in front of the latter. This fender is composed of two parallel horizontal bars (1' and three connecting cross-bars d each of which latter has its lower end flanged to form feet (1 The central cross-bar d has an upper end d bent or curved to form a hook, by
Serial No. 505,289. (No model.)
which the fender may be conveniently handled, and lowered into or removed from engagement with the right angular holding plate, the upper bar 01' fitting snug "within the space formed by said right-angular plates.
From what has been said it will be seen that the andiron can be readily and easily transported from place to place by simply grasping the arched connecting bar, and also that the fender can be readily inserted in place and likewise removed.
An andiron thus constructed is extremely simple and inexpensive.
I claim as my invention- 1. An andiron composed of two dogs connected together byan arched bar,and a fender, composed of a series of longitudinal and transverse bars connected together at the points of crossing, adapted to be removably attached to the arched bar and having a hook midway of its ends constituting a handle, substantially as described.
2. An andiron comprising two dogs con nected together by an arched bar, holders provided on the vertical members of the arched bar, and a fender composed of a series of longitudinal bars connected together at the points of crossing and adapted to be fitted in the said holders and secured to the arched bar thereby, substantially as described.
3. The herein specified andiron and fender composed of two dogs connected by an arched bar having its longer ends turned out to pro vide feet, right angular platessecured to the vertical member of the arched bar, and a fender composed of longitudinal bars, and transverse bars connecting the longitudinal bars in series, the lower end of the transverse bars being bent outward to provide feet and the upper end ofthe intermediate bar being formed into a hook to provide a handle, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. I
JOHN RICHARD GROGAN.
Witnesses:
