FENCE-WIRE STRETCHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 524,582, dated August 14, 1894.
Application filed December 27, 1893- Serial No. 494,845- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BRENSON DOUD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chili, in the county of Miami and State of Indiana,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Wire Stretchers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has for its object to provide a permanent attachment to a fencewire to be used for taking up the slack thereof; a device that will be simple in construction and inexpensive in its manufacture and 'that will eifectivelyoperate in tightening the wire when it becomes slack or sags.
The invention consists in a device constructed substantially as shown in the draw- I ings and hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents my improved device showing it in position upon a fence-wire. Fig. 2 is an end view of the device on an enlarged scale showing the wire in engagement therewith. Fig. 3 represents in perspective the tension roller and clamp detached from each other. Fig. 4 is a detail view showing a modification of the clamp.
In the accompanying drawings A represents the two posts of a fence and B the wires connected thereto in any suitable manner.
The device for tightening the fence-Wire consists of the tension roller D and clamp E.
The roller D has formedtherein a longitudinal slot at to receive the clamp E, and one end of said roller is flattened as shown at b, or otherwise formed for the engagement therewith of a suitable wrench or other tool used for turning it. The opposite end of the roller D is provided with a transverse channel 0 extending diametrically across the 'end of the roller with which engages the fence-wire.
A spiral groove d is formed upon the exterior of the roller 1) in close proximity to the transverse channel 0 to form a seat for the wire in its first coil and thus prevent it from slipping.
The clamp E which is to engage with the slot a, may be formed of wire and of U-shape as shown in Fig. 3 or may be of the form as shown in Fig. 4, whichever may be found most desirable. After the wire is coiled upon the roller suiticiently to take up the slack in said roller, the clamp is passed through the longitudinal slot and holds the roller from turning and the wire from unwinding. By this simple means the wire is perfectly stretched and is given the necessary tension as the clamp is brought in contact with the wire on both sides of the roller and thereby firmly holding it against untwisting and the wire being on line at each side of the roller gives better results and enables the wire to pull in line throughout its length.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A device for tightening fence-Wire, consisting of a tension-roller having alongitudinal slot, a transverse channel at one end, a spiral groove in close proximity to said channel to form a seat for the fence-wire, and a suitable clamp detachably connected to the roller, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a device for tightening fence-wire, a tension roller having a longitudinal slot, a transverse channel at one end, and a spiral groove, and a clamp for engagement with the slot and provided with notched ends to receive the wire, substantially as and for the purpos described.
