UNITED STAT S PATENT OFFIC FREDERICK PETERS, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
REVERSIBLE PAPER-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 523,965, dated J'u1y31, 1894.
Application 'filed March 19, 1 8 94.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK PETERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reversible Paper-Outters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in a paper cutter and its novelty will be fully understood from the following description and claim when taken in connection with'the annexed drawings, and the objects of my in vention are to provide a paper cutter that will cut paper such as checks or coupons at difierentangles, so as to correspond with figures or letters that may be left upon the stub of a check book. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whicl 1 I Figure 1. is a top view showing position of slides upon cutter when not in use. Fig. 2. is a top view showingposition of slides when operated.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout both views.
In the drawings, 1 shows a metal strip, provided with a metal plate 2, which rests upon slides 4 in such a manner as to keep them securely in position against displacement, and at the same time to permit a free movement of the slides back and forth.
3 is a metal strip resting upon the lower member of the base 1, and is intended to give strength thereto, and at the same time not increase weight of cutter. When desired the strip and base may be constructed of one piece of metal.
i 5 shows cutting edges of base and slides which cut paper.
6 are rivets for holding plate 2, and strip 3 in position which rivets connect the sides of the plate with the base but leave its center Serial No. 504,315.- (No model.)
free topermit the slides to move under it and above said base.
7 and 8 are lugs or metal knobs on ends of slides 4, and which permit a free movement of the slides, when cutter is desired to be used upon paper, thus enabling a slide to be placed in such a position as to permit the paper to be out any desired angle.
In practice the cutter is placed upon the paper as shown in Fig. 1, and the slides 4 drawn out to any desired distance as shown in Fig. .2, the left hand is placed upon the plate 2 to hold cutter in position, and the check, coupon or paper desired to be cut is drawn against the cutting edges 5 of base and slides by the right hand and then suddenly raised, when it will be cut as desired, the cutting edge on the lower member of the base severing the check at its lower edge from the others on the same page, and the cutting edges of the slides severing it from the stub in such manner as to leave only the proper figures remaining at the left end of the check as is usual on checks as now made.
An advantage of my invention is its economical construction, and ease by which the device may be operated.
Having described my invention, and the manner in which the same is or may be operated I would say in conclusion that Ido not limit myself to the precise details shown in illustration, as the same may be varied to some extent, but
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A check cutter of right angular shape in 7 plan with a paper-cutting edge at the upper edge of its horizontal arm and movable slides parallel with its upright arm and having cutting edges, all as and for the purpose set forth In testimony whereof I affix my signature in
