BOXING-G LOVE.

SPECIFIGATION forming part of .Letters Patent No. 523,568, dated July 24, 1 894.

Be it known that I, OTTo ALEXANDER BUR- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain nevv'and useful Improvements in Boxing-Gloves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as w1ll enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention has relation. to boxing gloves; and it consists in certain peculiari ties 111 the construction thereof, substantially as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the subjoined claims.

It 1s well known that in boxing or sparring contests disputes frequently arise both as to the fairness of blows and as to the exact number of times the contestants have given and received blows, which disputes have been decided with more-0r less uncertainty as to the correctness of the judgments rendered, because the judges or referees had to depend solely on the alertness and correctness of their VlSlOn, which provides, at the best, an unsatisfactory basis for decisions in such contests,

as the movements of the adversaries frequently are so quick and in such quick succession that the eye cannot correctly follow all of them. This is especially disadvantageous in contests to be decided upon a basis of points only, instead of upon a knockout. To overcome this difliculty by providing the boxing glove with a device which, without inj uring the contestants, will afford visible, indisputable evidence on the persons of the contestants as to the number of times and the exact places where each opponent was struck by his antagonist, is the object of my invention. This object is accomplished by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 represents a boxing glove provided with my improvements, said glove being shown as if it were on the doubled fist of a person. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the glove open, having the marker in the palm thereof. Fig. 3 is a sectional side view and Fig. 4: a plan view of the cup which contains the marker proper.

The same letters of reference designate the same parts in the several figures.

A designates the glove, considered as a whole, and a the inner lining thereof. This glove has, at any suitable point, a removed part, shown at A, within which is located a cup, B,which contains themarkensaid marker preferably consisting of a suitable porous and compressible device, 0, saturated with a marking fluid or substance, and having an opening or openings through which the marking fluid or substance is forced when the comand will discharge a part of said fluid when subjected to very slight pressure.

The cup, B, is preferably made of rubber, so as to be elastic enough to not impede compression and expansion of the sponge and to not injure the person struck by the glove, and

it has in its outer end a series of openings, 1), through which the marking fluid passes and arms, b, for holding the sponge in place, and in its inner end an opening, I)", through which the sponge is inserted. This cup is removably secured to the inner lining, a, of the glove, preferably by thin steel washers, D D, made long enough to extend over the opening, 5" in the cup and located respectively within and outside of said cup, and by abroad, fiat nut, E, and bolt, E, so that by disengaging the bolt from the nut the cup is released and may be removed, and, by tightening the bolt through the nut, the cup is secured in place. Access may be had to the head of said bolt for screwing and unscrewing the same from the outside of the glove, through the cup when the latter contains a sponge, and said head of the bolt is-preferably formed with a slit or recess, 6, adapted to be engaged by a screw driver blade for the purpose of operating it.

From the above it will readily be seen that when a blow has landed the device which contains the marking fluid is compressed and thereby instantaneously discharges a part of 1ts contents against the spot struck. Visible evidences of the fact that a'blowhas been given and of the exact spot it landed on are thereby given, which evidences may be used as the basis for an absolutely correct decision, which marks may be erased at the end of each round. It is obvious that each glove may be provided with any number of markers, and that said marker or markers may be located in any suitable place or places in the glove.

I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise construction herein shown and described,as it will, doubtless, be found that some of the details may be advantageously varied, and to vary such details I therefore reserve to myself the liberty.

Having now described my invention, what I believe to be new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, and what I therefore claim, 15-

1. Aboxing glove, having a part of its surface removed, and provided within said removed part with a porous andcompressible device designed to contain a supply of marking fluid or substance and to discharge the same through the mouth of said removed part when compressed, as by a blow given, substantially as described.

2. A boxing glove, having a part of its surface removed and provided, within said re moved part, with a flexible cup, and a porous and compressible device, received by said cup and adapted to contain a marking fluid or substance, substantially as described.

3. A boxing glove, having a part of its surface removed, and provided, within said removed part, with a removable flexible cup having open spaces and cross arms at its outer end and an opening in its inner end, and a porous and compressible device received by said cup and adapted to discharge a marking fluid or substance through said spaces in the outerend thereof when compressed, as by a blow given, substantially as described.

4. A boxing glove, having a part of its surface removed and provided, within said removed part, with a flexible cup having an opening in its outer end and also having an opening in its inner end, washers, covering said opening in the inner end of the cup, means, extending through said last-named opening and washers, for securing said cup removably to the glove, and a compressible device in said cup designed to contain a marking fluid or substance, substantially as described and for the purposes specified.
