DARK LANTERN.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, VINCENT GROOM, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Oaken, Wolverhampton, in the county of Stafford, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lanterns, (for which I have obtained a patent in Great Britain, No. 8,252, bearing date May 2, 1892,) of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in the construction and arrangement of lanterns, in which the light maybe readily exposed or hidden, at the will of the person carrying it; and its objects are to provide an improved arrangement of a double ended pressure bar by which the mechanism is operated; and an improved method of carrying and operating the covering shutter or disk. I effect these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which are numbers of reference, similar numbers referring throughout the several views to the same thing or part.

Figure 1, is ageneral rear view of this my invention in which the door of the lantern is shown open. Fig. 2, is a side sectional elevation of the invention on or about the line A-B (Fig.1). Fig. 3, is a sectional plan view of the invention on line 0-D (Fig. 1).

1, is the bod y of the lantern, which may be terns have been made with slides or covers of any desirable sectional shape.

2, is the oil container or lamp, which is made removable from the lantern by sliding or otherwise in the ordinary manner.

3, is the reflector which maybe removably or permanently attached either to the lamp 2, or it may be similarly carried upon the door 4, as shown. The door 4, is hinged at 5.

6, is an inwardly reflecting cone, having the usual contracted aperture at 7.

Carried in suitable bearings at 8, 8, is a horizontal spindle 9, to which is connected the pendulous disk 10, by means of the rod 11. This disk 10, (as may be seen) is arranged to cover the aperture 7, or to be removed clear of it. At the other end of the spindle 9, is the double ended pressure bar 12, having the

14, is a cam upon the spindle 9, whose irregular or nonconcentric form, impinges upon the spring 15, which latter is secured at its one or both ends to the body of the lamp, so as to be slightly springy at its center. The object of this spring 15, and cam 14, is that thereby, the open or closed position of the disk 10, shall be maintained, without fear of unwilled or accidental movement. The position of the

Suitable stop pieces

The usual and necessary perforations, 850., for ventilation and other common details, may be made and arranged according to requirement.
