TABLE OR CALL BELL.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 52,344, dated January 30, 1866 antedated January 22, 1866.

To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it knowii that 1, ALFRED W. TURNER, of the city, county, aiid State of New York, have invented a iiew and Improved Table or Call Bell; aiid I do hereby declare tliatthe following` is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, whicli will enable those skilled iii the art to make and use the same, reference being had to tlie accoiiipaiiying drawing, forming part of this specification.

Tlie drawing represents a vertical central section of my inveiitioii.

This invention relates to a new aiid improved call-bell, designed more especially for the table and for private use, as well as restaurants.

Tlie invention consists in applying` a bell to a vertical spiiidle or arbor, which may be attached to a separate or independent base or form a portion of any table article, such as a easter, for instance, said bell being allowed to slide freely on the spindle or arbor, and haviii g a spring` or elastic cord connected with it, so as to have a tendency to draw the bell upward to the top of the spindle or arbor aiidiii contact witli a knob thereon, the lower part of the spindle or arbor being provided witli a catch or fastening to hold the bell down, and all arranged in such a manner that when the bell is released from the catch or fastenin g the spring will dran7 upward the bell and cause it to strike the kiob so as to produce the necessary sound, the elevated position of the bell indicating to the waiter that it has been sounded, so that where several tables are placed in one and the same room the waiter or attendant will know at once wliere his services are required. The senses, therefore, of both sight and hearing are brought into requisition in obeying the bell, and much annoyance tliereby avoided. I

A represents an upright liollow spiiidle, which, in this instance, is lattached to a suitable base, B, but may, if desired, form a portion of any table article, such as a easter, for instance. I

C represents a bell, which is fitted loosely on the spindle A, and is allowed to slide freely up and down thereoi'i. This bell isconnected to aii elastic cord, D, the lower eiid ot' which passes through the center of the base B, and is secured by a knot, a, or other means, said cord passing up to the top of the spiiidle and around a bar, b, and extending down to the lower end of the sleeve c of the bell, which sleeve slides on the spindle.

E represents a catch or fastening, which is attached to the lower part of the spiiidle to hold the bell down, and F. is a kiiob screwed or otherwise fitted to the top of the spiiidle.

0' represents the bell-hammer, which is attached to an elastic arni, ax, secured to the bell-sleeve c, said arin being so arranged or applied as to keep the hammer a short distaiice fron the bell.

From the above description it will he seen that wlieii the bell C is drawn down oii the spiiidle A and secured b v the catch or fasteningI E the elastic cord D will be stretched, and when the bell is released from the catch or fastenin g the elastic cord will suddenly draw up the bell, causing itto strike the knob, wheii the haniiier O' will act upon the bell and produce the sound, the elevated positioii of the bell iiidicatiiig to the waiter or attendant where his services are required.

I do not confine myself to an elastic cord for a spring, as other springs inay be used, and a weight inay be used instead of a spring for elevating the bell; but a spring I consider preferable.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The slidin g bell placed oii a spiiidle or arbor which is attaclied to a separate base or to any table article, iii connection with a spring or its equivalent, arranged to operate iii the nianiier substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
