Description

(No Model.)
W. H. BAILEY, Sr. DEVICE FOR THE PROTECTION OF VBSSELS.
Patented July 24, 1894.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAMIIENEY BAIL Y,-
SR., OF HOUSTON, TEXAS.
DEVICE FOR THE PROTECTION OF VESSELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 523,422, dated J uly 24, 1894. Application filed December 9, 1892- Serial No. 454,592 (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: 7
v Beitknown thatLWILLIAMHENRYBAILEY, Sr., of Houston, county of Harris, and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements for the Protection of Vessels, or other Carriers for Land or Sea Service, of which the following is a specification,-ref erence being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the hull of a boat with my protecting shield applied. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view of one of the shields. v
Referring to the letters on the drawings, A indicates a ships hull, and B a resilient shield applied to the outside of the same, and consisting of supporting plates 0 and D connected by links E, or the like, formingjointed and yielding couplings. These parts form supports for the springs G. Such protecting shields may be applied for example in any suitable manner on the outside of a ships 'hull, to form a protector useful in cases of I collisions of all sorts, and may be of various forms to suit difierent situations, the essential thing being the employment of yielding metallic holders for supporting rubber or other springs, substantially as described.
What I claim is A resilient shield composed of supporting plates, interposed springs between said sup- I porting plates, chains therebetween adapted to limit the movement of one supporting plate, the other supporting plate being rigidly secured to the side of a ships hull or other similar carrier, substantially as specified.
