FAN ATTACHMENT FOR SWINGS, 86C- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 523,416, dated July 24, 1894. Application filed December 1, 1893. Serial No.492,509- (No model.)

To a whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES M. SHERER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Law rence,in the county of Douglas and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Fan of the swing; to secure this result with avery simple mechanism and without the necessity of various levers, toggles, &;c., that are usnall y employed in this class of inventions.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter specified and particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawingsz-Figure 1 is a perspective view of aswing, the same having a fan attachment applied thereto in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the manner of applying the fan attachment and the swing to the roof of a porch or other similar structure.

Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in both figures of the drawings.

In the present instance I employ in the construet-ion shown in Fig.1 front and rear inclined standards 1 which meet at their upper ends and are connected by a transverse shaft 2, which is provided at each side of its center.

Bearing openings 6 are formed in the front standards below the pinions, and in said bearings take the trunnions or stub-shafts 7 of a pair of disks 8. These disks 8 are connected with the upper ends of a bail 9 to which the swing-seat 10 is attached, and each also .carries at its upper side above the bail a segmentally toothed arm 11, the teeth of said arm engaging with the pinions before mentioned. Thus it will be obvious, that as the swing vibrates, the segmentally toothed arms each ongaging with a pinion serves to turn thesame and thus swings the fan back and forth in a contrary direction to the movements of the swing, sothat as the swing and its occupant moves forward or backward it meets the fan moving in a contrary direction, and is thus subjected to a gentle breeze or fanning generated by the movements of the fan.

' In Fig. 2 I have illustrated a slightly modified construction, and have shown how the fan may be applied to a porch without injury to the latter. In said figure 12 indicates a pair of beams which are connected by transverse tie-bars or rods 13 let into the ends thereof. These bars or rods 13 are connected to the inner ends of" a pair of suspension ropes 14:, whose opposite ends are secured to some suitable point orobject,whereby the beams 12, as will be obvious, will be prevented from any longitudinal movement. A transverse shaft 15 is employed in this instance, asin the previous, as are also the pinions 16 arranged at each sideof thecenter thereof and between the beams 12. The fan-bail 17 carrying a fan 18 has its upper ends attached to the pinions and moves with the shaft. I

The swing-bail 18' is connected as at 19 to the said beams 12, and in this instance, carries a small segmental arm 20 which engages with the pinions.

The operation of this construction is precisely the same as that heretofore described, as is also the result secured.

I do not limit myinvention to the precise details of construction herein shown and described, but hold that I may make variations in the same Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof,

such variations for instance being obvious as I-have herein attempted to illustrate.

It will of course be understood that hammocks, cradles, or other supporting devices may be substituted for the seat, the same result being secured ineaoh instance.

Having described my invention, what I claim'is-' 1. The combination with opposite supports, the shaft arranged therein, pinions upon the shaft, and a fan carried by the shaft, of a swing bail pivoted below the shaft, and segmentally toothed arms carried by the bail and of the disks and engaging the pinions, and a seat-carrying bail connected at its upper terminals to the said disks, substantially as 15 specified.
