Description

llNrrEn STATES PATENT OFFICE.,
ANDREW RANKIN, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
CHAMBER-POT.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 52,320, dated January 30, 1866.
To all whom t may concern;
Be it known that I, ANDREW RANKIN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Chamber-Pots 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to a novel construction of a chamber-pot, so called, the object of which is to so arrange, in connection With the same, a receptacle or reservoir for any suitable deodorizing agent or compound that the disagreeable odors emitted from the contents thereof will be entirely overcome or neutralized, or sufficiently so in escaping therefrom, as will be now explained, reference being had to the accompanying plate of drawings, of Which- Figure l is a plan or top view ofthe chamber-pot made according to my improvement, With the cover removed 5 and Fig. 2, a central vertical section taken in lthe plane of the line x zo, Fig. 1, with the cover placed on the body ot" the pot.
A A in the drawings represent the body portion of the chamber-pot, which may be made of any of the ordinary forms and materials, or any other suitable form or material; B, its cover, and O its handle, both of which are made hollow and have openings a c at their upper portions, through Which communication is had with their respective interior chambers,
b and c. lThese chambers b and c are filled, orv
nearly so, with any suitable deodorizin g agent, substance, or compound, as represented by red lines in the drawings-but the deodorizer Which I prefer to use being that described in the specification accompanying an application for Letters Patent made by me and bearing even ldate herewith, for a deodorizing compoundthe outlets of which cham bers are then stopped or closed by a cork, f, hung to the chamber pot by short chains g g, so as to prevent their becoming` lost or misplaced, the stoppers preventing the deodorizer from escaping as the pot is carried about from place to place.
When the pot isvin use, or has been used for any of the purposes for which it is ordinarily employed, the stoppers ff are removed from the chamber-outlets, exposing t-he deodorizer contained therein to the air, whereby the obnoxious odors or efliuvia arising from the chamber-pot are overcome and entirely neutralized as they escape from the pot to the room.
The form of the chambers b and c may be indenitely varied, as Well as their position With regard to the chamber-pot., changed at pleasure-as, for instance, by forming the deodorizin g chamber or chambers around the rim ofthe pot, and in other and various Waysand therefore I do not intend to limit myself 'to any particular form or position of the deodorizing chamber or receptacle with regard to the chamber-pot itself, or to any number of such receptacles, be there one or more.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- So constructing a chamber-pot as to form a receptacle or receptacles for any suitable deodorizing agent or compound, substantially in the manner described, and for the purpose specified.
The above specication of my invention signed by me this 24th day of October, 1865.
ANDREW RANKIN.
